Frequency Response

I started with a simple frequency response test which runs through frequencies between around 20Hz – 20kHZ. Fancy testing equipment wasn’t available so this was just a rough test to get an idea of how low/high the subwoofer/tweet will go. The 602s were able to push sound as low as about 30-40Hz and really picked up around 50Hz. This is right about where they need to be to hear those deepest of the deep bass notes.
In the high end I was able to hear up to about 16kHz which is more of a test of my ears than the speakers. Basically, you are not going to have any problems with frequencies being cut off like a lower end set of speakers would thanks in big part to the dedicated sub/mid/tweeter.

Music and Movie Testing

So while frequency response is good to know, it is little more than just numbers. The real test comes from how they actually sound, and the 602s sound pretty good. The bass overall was decent with a nice driving thump with most music, but when it started to get too complex (Tool, certain hip-hop and electronic, etc.) things got a little muddy. The mids were excellent providing clean, clear vocals and guitar with everything I tested. The highs were also impressive with crisp symbols that never got shrill or harsh. Overall the 602s handled everything from rap to rock and dubstep to classical pretty well with nothing that really stood out to me as poor sounding.

Volume was pretty good but not incredible. I could see getting pretty close to max in a large room during a party or watching a movie. Quality seems to stay consistent throughout the volume range though.

Setup and Installation

Unlike a traditional home theater receiver, the 602s plug right in to your TV rather than a specific device for input. What this means is that any sound that would normally come from your TV (television shows, movies, video games, etc.) instead come through the speakers. Most home theater receivers get input directly from the device which limits you to one or two devices without using a switch. By getting input from the TV you are only limited by the number of inputs your TV has.
The setup couldn’t get much simpler. Just plug in the speakers to an outlet, hook them together with the supplied speaker wire, and plug them in to your TV with either the 3.5mm plug or straight RCA plugs if your TV supports it.
One thing that I thought was a little strange was that the subwoofer and control knobs faced inside if you set it up as it was designed. In my application this didn’t really work because I wanted the speakers against the TV stand with the controls and subs pointing out. It was easily remedied though by simply swapping the left and right RCA plugs and orienting them the other way.
