International Computex 2007 Taipei Show Summary

A Growing Influence:

Either by design or as a result of inherent values and healthy living, taiwan's electronics industry continues to have a growing global impact to technology. Already taiwan is recognized by many as a world leader in the so called "green" movement among companies whilst at the same time delivering products at a lower price point than are available by many competing companies in the United States, Canadian, and others world wide. The real miracle here is that most of these companies are maintaining these attributes while remaining very employee focused.

It is with this in mind that the International COmputex comes by its reputation as a show that delivers demonstrations of the latest in technologies that are years ahead of what we will likely see in the United States. Is is not only the US that should take note of this however, as companies in Taiwan are adopting long term, 10-20 year strategies with regards to technology and their workforce.

Computex 2007:

At Computex 2007 we witnessed an emphisis on presentation of media, LCD displays, and further enhancing the performance of existing technologies. Examples included:

  1. A stunning OLED flexible display with just as much resolution and clarity as your LCD at home.
  2. Wall sized moving arrays on LED lights capable of displaying panoramic movies and pictures at a fraction of the cost of a similarly sized screen.
  3. DDR3 modules capable of speeds and latencies far in excess of current DDR2 modules.
  4. Technologies being prepared by companies like Asus that will open the mobile computing markets in the United States to greater quality tiny laptops at lower prices.
  5. Peripherals and Add-ons for Microsoft's Windows Vista and all its many flavors. Emphisis placed on the multimedia extensions and used as a home media platform.

Our exploration of Taipei and Taiwan this year was courtesy of Taitra, an or ganization dedicated to the establishment of trade and expansion of business with Taiwan. Taitra is involved in the promotion of nearly every type of product produced in Taiwan and we are very grateful for the opportunity they gave us.

Update: Taitra will be present at the upcoming CES 2008 show. If you are a business with an interest in lowering your costs or obtaining hgih quality products for sale in your country we highly suggest you schedule a meeting. They will be in the Sands Expo hall and have they own Taiwan Pavilion.

Display Taiwan:

Display Taiwan is a show dedicated to display technology is all of its forms. The show is hosted by TAITRA, and several other organizations and is heavily focused oupon FPD (Flat Panel Display) technology. The 2007 show demonstrated many LCD and TFT displays as well as the new growing market for OLED displays. Companies brought entire assembly line machines onto the show floor while other companies demonstrated differences between displays and yet other companies were showing off their LCD films. These were but only a few of the technologies present at the show. We found everything from a small solar village set up to laser technology and monumental wall sized displays. As the FPD industry is huge in Taiwan it's quite understandable to have a show dedicated to the promotion of this product line and trade.

Display Taiwan took place just after the conclusion of the Computex show from June 13th through the 15th and we were surprised by the large attendance of the show having expected much of the Computex crowd to leave.

Many companies were present during Display Taiwan and we of course were able to compare the technology and displays created by Taiwan based companies against those from other countries. We are comfortable saying that in 8 out of 10 situations we favored displays created in Taiwan versus those manufactured abroad. On the next page you will find an image gallery from this convention where you will see examples. We found it was simply a matter of Taiwan based displays having less stuck pixels, a greater MTBF, and much, much more vivid color.

Update: The 2008 Display Taiwan show is set to take place once again after Computex during June 11-13.

Science Park:

In the southern district of Tainan, which used to be the capital of taiwan until 1887, the country has established a Science Park made up of many companies all dedicated to different technologies. We were invited by Taitra to board a bullet train to the park and tour several companies. The trip was fascinating and not to mention the exposure to the cultural. All of the companies demonstrated above standard ethics, goals, and dedication to their employees. The innovativeness of these companies extends right into their very buildings. A fine example is Delta, a company well known in the US for their fans and power supplies. Their products can be found in everything from your computer case to your Dell power adapter. Their building is a work of art not to mention functional. the building is created in such a fashion so as to achieve several benefits, some of which are:

  • Make employees walk more to promote health
  • Conserve energy
  • Collect and Recycle Rain Water
  • Promote mental wellness

This was only one of several companies visited all of which integrated unique features into their buildings and overall we the impression we left with was that all of these companies were technologically ahead of those in the United States or anywhere else we have been. We have been to many different places so this is saying a lot.
