OK, I'm about to kill myself over this because everywhere you see datacables for cellphones, you see stuff about being able to connect to the internet though them. HOW DO YOU DO THIS?!

I have myself a cable for my phone, and it works. I can send backgrounds and all to it. However, I have no idea how to connect to the net. I tried just installing a generic modem on the port where the cable was installed(it's a USB cable that emulates a com-port) and I could actually query the phone and get something back. It would have my phones name in the jiberish and all. However, every time I try to connect to the net, I get that it can't get a dial tone. Thats kinda a duh, but what can I do to fix this?

internet connections through cell phones (USB connected to notebook), is provided by the cellphone provider. It's not a modem signal over the phone.

I'm not talking about WAP, or whatever. I have heard of people using cellphones for standard dialup

prometheus - not to sound rude, but what the HELL do you think I've been doing since I first got this cable a few months ago?

Jason - Also not to sound rude, but don't respond if you don't know the answer

Sorry you feel that way, ignore all of them. You should be able to use infrared or Bluetooth, if you have a device with those capabilities, to connect. The easiest way is probably to just get an additional PC card.

nah, we don't need attitudes like that anyway. Besides, if this mythical "revival" that i've heard so little about has any truth to it, we have nothing to worry about... But it's just like HL2... all bark and no bite... We need results...

Well some new attitudes, too, would be nice for a change. Since the recent wave of spamming (going on probably 6 months now) has started, solutions to problems have decreased significantly. People with problems have noticed, and they've posted less and less. I think people need to realize that they don't have to respond to every new post.

Back to the topic, I saw this (http://www.attwireless.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phones/pop_phonedetails.jhtml?id=3100041&titleNumber=11) at AT&T Wireless, which has EDGE capability (up to about 60kbps real world downstream). What service and phone do you have? (I may be able to help you better with that information).

ok yeah ignore all of them except vee_ess and me

there are softwares based on what brand of phone you use
so basically what im saying is
this special dialup function works through a special software from your phone manufacture or a 3rd party

if your phone is sony SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM, check out www.clubsonySPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM.com

BUT
the key is from your cellular provider that has the special service
not just the software
so i would suggest asking your cell phone provider company for their own specific solutions to your phone

this technology is slow btw
about 3x 56k to 28.8k speed
depending on your reception and coverage area

now vee_ess provided a solution offered by AT&T

here is another one
