View Full Version : Interesting LCD diminsions

I've been noticing that advertised sizes of LCD's don't exactly match those of the specified diminsions. For example, on Newegg, most of their advertised 19" LCD's have demisions of 17x17x8. (give or take a few 10ths of an inch). One even has a 15x15x6 specification. Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but no matter how you measure that, it does not even come close to 19".
However, some advertised LCD's have specifications that exceed the 19" advertised size so I would have to believe that these companies are in fact selling 19" monitors.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't manufacurers made to list the actual "viewable" size on CRT monitors? Does this not apply to LCD's?

monitors are measured diagonally... so yes, it's probably 19"

That makes no sense
Of course CRT monitors viewable is measured diagonally. That's common knowledge and had nothing to do with the observation or question posed.
What I'm saying and asking is LCD dimensions do not correspond to the size of the LCD advertised nor do they specify a "viewable" like CRT monitors are required too. Do LCD monitors fall into the same catagory as CRT Monitors when advertising their size as mesured diagonally (viewable)?

CRT's are not marketed by the viewable size.. LCD's are... end of story...

Jason, I'm trying to get some valuable information here.
I'm sure your a knowledgble person and I don't mean any disrespect but please don't post in a thread unless you have information that is pertinant to the topic at hand.
All you are trying to do is muddy up a legitimate post by trying to argue a mute point. So I ask you, please refrain from assuming your important enough in saying "end of story..." because I'm pretty sure your not. If I still had my admin abilities here, I would have delted that post. So please refrain yourself and let the people that want to participate in this thread with valuable information do so without interuptions from you.
Thank you.

... ok sure, I won't post in your threads anymore with plain as day answers that are in fact obvious and correct... your wish is my command... :shake:

hmm
17x17x8 does NOT turn into a 19" LCD
so you are right, something is fishy here
sqrt(17^2 + 17^2) = 24
for diagnal measurement
thats really strange...
or does are there 5 inches of diagnal border plastic we didnt take in account of?
perhaps thats it
24-5 = 19
but wait....
5 inches of plastic?
that sounds like a lot even for diagnal measuremeants for the corners...
hmm....
let us all investigate into this

perhaps there was a typo?

you know what
i think i was right
i just got home instead of posting on my ibm x31 laptop (LCD with thin border)
my current CRT (about to be replaced tonight!) has about 2.5 inches of plastic border on the top left corner and bottom right corner all together
so yeah
17x17 is the measurement of the plastic casing for the whole monitor, not just the LCD panel itself
once again, Evil Techie saves the day!
lol :p

that's what I said ET.. just in different words.. and he was talking about an LCD though, of course CRT's have 10 miles of plastic, but I guess a crappy LCD could too... I know my lcd at home only has like 1.5 inches total of plastic

What's the definition of "viewable size"?
Jason425
10-27-2004, 09:59 PM
the part of the monitor that displays stuff from the comp.. stuff that isn't plastic and surrounding the glass or whatever in the middle...

How is this measured? Diagonally or by HxW?
Jason425
10-27-2004, 10:22 PM
fairly certain it's diagonally.. if it was HxW it's be a much bigger number.. 17X17= 289...

yeah its diagonally
my definition of viewable is...
what displays pr0n is considered viewable area
