View Full Version : NV40 broken video processor

I personally emailed NVIDIA every other week from May until August asking for an update, with no official or unofficial response as to why nothing had happened with the illustrious Video Processor. Finally, when 23 out of the 35 slides of the NVIDIA press presentation about the GeForce 6200 featured the GPU's "Video Processor", I had had enough. It was only then that NVIDIA came clean about the current state of the Video Processor.
The Video Processor (soon to receive a true marketing name) on the NV40 was somewhat broken, although it featured MPEG 2 decode acceleration. Apparently, support for WMV9 decode acceleration was not up to par with what NVIDIA had hoped for. As of the publication of this article, NVIDIA still has not answered our questions of whether or not there is any hardware encoding acceleration as was originally promised with NV40. So, the feature set of the Video Processor on NV40 (the GeForce 6800) was incomplete, only in its support for WMV9 acceleration (arguably the most important feature of it).
NVIDIA quietly fixed the problem in the 6600GT and since the 6200 is based on the 6600, the 6200 also features the "fixed" Video Processor with WMV9 decode acceleration support...
NVIDIA is currently aiming to have us a functional driver and codec that will enable the Video Processor and take advantage of its capabilities in the next month or so; given that the feature has already been on cards (in one form or another) for 6 months now, we're just going to have to wait and see.
here is my proof...

but you can always turn off support for it right? does this effect the 6800GT?

This affects Every 6800 series product: the NU, GT, or U. Does it affect gaming? Nope. I would only worry if you like to edit movies and/or are in to the HD stuff. nVidia says their next driver will fix this problem.. but who knows

problems will be solved
so they said
so no biggy here

it is a hardware problem.. according to the 23 page thread at nvnews.net... maybe nvidia is trying to cover it up by saying it's software?

Ran the wimbledon movie HD preview and an interesting thing happened.. perhaps this one wasn't hyperthreading compatible? Most interesting though, it that it used the 2nd "cpu"... have a look..

Looks like I have a bum card. CPU Usage for the entire Liquid video was pegged at 100 percent along with choppy sections and dropped frames.
Time to check on RMA'n this BFG 6800GT-OC because I've been purchasing a boat load of stuff to start up a Video Production Studio and the last thing I want is a video card that constantly drops frames.

I'm still a little weary about all this. Apparently the "Liquid" trailer is a high definition video that the 6800's are advertised as being able to decode. My concern is being able to encode/decode AVI, Mpeg(x), etc, without HD.
Does anyone know of a program or a method that I can use to check encoding and decoding Mpegs to test that I do or do not have problems?

nvnews.net say that this fixes it: http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html
but
Yeah I'm talking with a guy now who wants to buy my BFG 6800GT OC for $380(I bought it for the same price.). I'm thinking about getting an x800 Pro, particularly a VIVO model... The run a lot cheaper(iv'e seen them from $300 - $350) than the GT's so I am going to be making a small profit, but still damn nVidia sends us a broken product that only kicks ass in gaming, thats like you buying a new car without tires/wheels :/

That's pretty crappy that someone has to purchase a product that is supposed to be supported.

The DVD decoder is for DVD playback only. I went ahead a purchased it anyways and there is a noticable difference in quality and CPU utilization. Don't help with the decoding of HD though. Until I find a way of benching Mpeg-2 encoding/decoding, I'm going to hold off RMA'ing my card. I spoke to BestBuy and they said they would take the card back for a refund or exchange because of the defect.

i'll believe it when I see it...
even if it was a vivo, it probably isn't a good overclocker or doesn't mod... people don't sell XT's for $330, they sell pros for that..
