Word on the Street: Is Microsoft Vista Living up to its Hype?

So Windows Vista (http://www.futurelooks.com/433-Word-on-the-Street--Is-Microsoft-Vista-Living-up-to-its-Hype-.html)is here. Actually, it's more like everywhere you go. Does anyone really care? What's the word on the street? Is it good? Is it bad? Is it...ugly? For those that are still on the fence, or just mildly curious, here is the buzz that we've been hearing around the good ole Internet.

I actually like the new look, but spare me the hype and the inflated cost for a product that was delivered late, is not compatible with many programs, and pushes new hardware upgrades like a dealer pushing drugs. But the look is quite nice.

I got a kick out of this:

The new sleep mode allows users to conserve as much energy as the traditional shutdown.

NEW? It's called S3 resume in XP, and has been there as long as XP has been out. (be aware that you may have to change a jumper on your mobo, and patch the registry, in order to wake from a handheld remote using S3. Also, VFD's and LCD's normally don't like this feature)

the 3-D desktop is being called revolutionary and is far more stunning than anything seen on the PC desktop before in a commercially available product.

Note the "commercially available" as 3D desktops have been available opensource for a few years. Also, there's a few commercial apps that give 3D desktops that have been available for many years, dating back to win98 such as 3dtop.

Some are arguing that Vista's widgets are a reaction to Mac OS X as are the animated thumbnails in the task bar.

Or gdesklets, cairoclock, qkrellm, and kibadock. What about HoverDesk, Aston Desktop, Objectdock, mobydock, etc.

Maybe Xpize an XP machine, replace taskswitchXP with Alt-tab thinger, and wallah.

Even the movie as wallpaper has been done numerous times in the past.

It's pretty, if you pay the premium to buy the ultimate version... But, why do I want it?
