Hey guys! I got one hell of a big fan from work the other day. Only problem is that it takes 24Volts and .55AMPS. How do I get this thing powered? Do I need a converter or something? I am going to be building a new system soon and I would like to put this thing on with a variable speed switch.

Ooo it's looks excatly same company makes a fan on my old Espon MX-100 wide carriage commerical printer, it's runs off the 24 VDC and hear little noisy like a "vroooom". I had to change the printer settings on the DIP switches hehe!

I dunno, and you can search on google to find the convertor from 24 VDC to lower VDC..

I wonder how much CFM this thing produces. All I know is that it's big and big is better.

wohoo, it's a NIDEC, the make also the famous Nidec GAMMA (most common: the gamma 28 ) these funny snail fans, used on the Noisecontrol Silverado HSF. gotta love nidec :-*

Yes but the question is how do I convert the voltage.

ok, get a transformator that puts out 24 volts ( see, if ya got 110 volts from the wall socket, you would need a (i don'T know the correct names foir the stuff in english, if ya don't understand or know a better woird, pls tell me) ya need a soft iron core with to wires warapped around ervery side of the O-formed core. on one side (the wall socket side) ya need the wire 4.5 as much times wrapped around the thing than on the other side. if ya hook the cable from the socket side to the socket, the current will flow through the wires and produce a pulsing magnetic field in the soft iron core. this field produces current in the other wire wrapped around the other side. this is called induction. and since ya got 4.5 as much wrappings on the socket side, it will only put out mains current divided through 4.5 on the secondary side. so ya got 110/4.5 and ya get nice 24.4 volts on the secondary side. but it is AC and so unsuitable for the small DC motor that probably sits in the fan, so ya gotta get a (dunno the name, but it converts AC to DC using 4 diodes, in german it is called brueckengleichrichter) AC/DC converter and voila, ya can hook up ya fan. you could also get some voltage regulator from radio shack. i will have a look around for ya and get some way to get the fan running. i owe ya that much, this is one chance to do something for ya that helps. :-*

if ya got the right transformer and AC/DC converter, yes 8)

my fan is plugged in the wall, controlled by a rheo meant for a ceiling fan.

Thanks -=aoC|PRoZaK=- that helps a bit. I am thinking about getting a PSU that will just do it for me.

according to ohms law ya could also use a 360 ohms resistor that is capable of handling more than 13,2 watts (usage: [voltage supply minus voltage device] devided through ampere device. to get the right amount of watts, simply multiply voltage device with apere device) ;D

This is all new to me. I know what to use now but how do i use it?

if ya use the trafo ya gotta connect the primary circut to ya wall plug, but plz pai attention bro - i've often got under juice when doing some cracy job - but if ya mess with it it can easily kill you. then SPAM;D you connect the wires of the secondary circut to the the ac connections of the AC/AC converter (most common marked with ~ ). then you connect the outputs of teh converter to ya fan, but only do it if gotz the right trafo. i'm gonna have a look to radioshack and digikey and find the correct parts for ya. gonna post it soon ;)

Cases can fly if you put wings on them. HMM

talking about wings i always wanted to put a custom spoiler on my computer... the perfect size... cuz i have a huge tower and it would look too nice. Kinda like those alluminum ones... from like fast and the furious. it would be too nice

Hey Smokey if it was me I would go rummage through my electrical/audio extras box.(Junk Box) SPAMAnd find a high output Universal AC adapter with the voltage toggle switch, and wire it to that. SPAMYou see then your not sucking power from your PC, and you just switch to different voltage setting on the ac adapter to turn the fan up or down. SPAMJust because it says 32V dosnt meen you have to run that! SPAMYou can pick up the universal AC adapter for $15 at Comp-USA.

Also if anyone wants me to I'll post how I did basically the same thing with a humidor and a heatsink fan. SPAMWorks great.

Man I put that fan in the trash. I was getting tired of looking at it. But I would liek to see a post on the thing you were talking about

Tonight Ill take some digital pics for you.

Mainly I was having problem with my Cigar Humidor not keeping the Humidity level of 70 like its suppose to.
So I branched out on my modding....
I went down to a crappy lil PC store downtown and picked up a used heatsink fan for 3 bucks. SPAMInside the humidor there is a circular sponge holder that is suppose to dissipate the moisture. SPAMSo I mounted the fan to the sponge holder. SPAMThen I went to the Electrical Junk box found an AC adapter. SPAMThen I drilled a hole into the back just big enough for the wire and siliconed it shut. SPAMI wanted a way to adjust the fan velocity, so I ripped a part an old universal auto cigarette lighter adapter and pulled the voltage switch out of it, which gives option for 3, 3.5, 5, 7, 9, 12 by way of switch. SPAMSo I wired that in between the power supply and the fan and velcroed it into the humidor lid. SPAMFor extra moisture I added a little tupperwear container with a whole bunch of holes in the lid, filled it with distilled water and velcroed that into the box as well. SPAMEver since my Humdor has ran at 65 to 75 as upposed to the 40 to 50 I was running before. SPAMIll throw some pics up tommorow.
