good review. how about finding some links for instructions on how to install any distro of linux on a compaq proliant 4500 server. it has a weird ass scsi controller in it that no version of linux, that I have tried, has been able to detect. any info would be appreciated.

I told Randy our "Networking Specialist" about your post. He should be here pretty soon. Have you tried Free BSD, or SUSE? I have heard good things about both of those. Never tried them but it might be worth a try.

it's funny because i'm making an iso image of redhat to install on my older pc. I want to get back into linux and learn it more. I find it quite hard, but it's very powerfull.

Yeah I have Mandrake running as a File server on my Windows network at home. I am planning in burning an ISO of readhat and using thay but it was such a pain in the ass getting SAMBA configured I really don't want to switch. My concern is that I'll get really good at Mandrake and then get a job where I need it and all Iwill know is mandrake.

the only thing about the article is that it seemed t change pace dramatically after the install part. it did not say much about the networking part. i enjoyed the article very much though...it was brief.
yeah, that wouldn't be a good thing, Smoked1, and I have to say, Redhat is easy to learn. very straightforward. I just have to get another computer (a junker) so that i can setup a network. Oh, btw, i have RH 7.2 and the only thing i cant figure out is the screen settings (refresh rate is too fast for my monitor). does anyone know how to change that?

It should be available in one of the manager things. I don't know what RedHat has for that. I wish my networking guy would get in here. the guy who wrote that Linux article could help you.

How about a mandrake review?
I would like to see one, or even a linux round-up.

I was told to find one version Linux and sick with it. so I chose the one that most comanies are using. RedHat

yeah, but you can never be too experienced. they all get easier the more you learn.
Smoked1, how long it take you to download each one (so it shows how fast the servers are too and not just files size) would be something good to put in review - keep track

Randy! Whats up man! Hows Work? LOL. This is the URL I have been using to download the ISOs http://mirrors.sunsite.dk
It's a little slow for my taste but I did get RedHaT 7.3 downloaded last night. It seemed to go at about 45k. I may stick with RedHat right off the bat but I want to try out some others. Unlike Randy I am not in a mission critical invoronment so I can mess with it and nobody is going to say shit. Randy on the other hand is in a situation where if he brings down the server just to try a new version, well lets just say that he may have a little situation there.
