View Full Version : To Suck, or to Blow ????

I was wondering if it would be better to have the fan on the HS sucking or blowing. SPAMI have an exhaust fan right above the cpu mounted on the case and i've read somewhere that having the cpu fan pulling air away from the heatsink then allows the the hot air to be pulled out by the exhaust fan resulting in more effective cooling of the cpu. SPAMR
ight now i have my cpu fan blowing air onto the heatsink and have idle temps of about 45 degrees celsius and around 50-51 under load, do these temps sound normal for a AthlonXP 2100+ that has not been overclocked yet? SPAM

i would keep the fan blowing. Your temps seem a little bit high. What kind of HSF are you using?

its a thermalright ax7 w/ an 80mm panaflo 32cfm fan

If the fan is near the source of heat, then it is better to pull the air out, as pushing would only disperse the hot air and raise the ambient temperature. If the fan is not near the source of heat, the it is better to push the air, because: pulling would not get rid of much heat, only some ambient cool air would come in and lower the ambient temperature and help to force the hotter air out

I prefer suck, then blow.
Realize I'm not talking about cooling solutions ;)

The bottom line here is this. Your heatsink fan should be blowing air. You should then have a couple of fans sucking air out of the back of your computer near the CPU. Also, you should have some fans blowing air in from the front and from the side panel. That to me is the least amount that you should have. Just make sure that you have the same amount going in as you do going out.
i just have to point out that this is a pretty catchy thread title...i would have to go with blow on this one cuz more heat is overal distributed out of the computer system its self...

Well it depends on other factors, like I said before, but it doesn't make a big difference most of the time so that is why a lot of us stick with blowing.
I prefer suck, then blow.

LOL. Aren't they the same thing in that context?
haha! yeah u got a point there vee_ess, i was just realizing that when i read that quote...but i could see where he would say that, being that it is kinda an oximoron if u say blow and u actualy suck, know what i mean.. (man what an informative thread this is turining into...i might add)

One theory I heard was to pull the air in the back of the case near the CPU. SPAMSince your CPU makes the most heat you want it to get the coolest air. SPAMThen blow the hot air out the front. SPAMBut since I've added my wet air filter to the front it wouldn't catch much dust if my front fan was the exhaust. SPAMAnd you allways want your CPU fan blowing down on the heatsink. SPAM(I'm not going to even get into the sub-topic of this thread).
Way to keep it clean there, Savage....yeah u got a point, we have kinda mutated this thread!!! SPAM;D SPAM But that is why NetSmog is so great, we find other meanings and values for things that we talk about so that the topics are more interesting. That way, we keep the posters attention's on this site, and not let the stray off to another tech forum site! SPAM;)

HA HA. It's all just good fun HERE! I will be taking a look at a few water cooling solutions pretty soon here folks/. Something tells me that after that air cooling will be a thing of the past for me. Or maybe not :P

I know what your sayin. SPAMI've got some idea's for water coolin' but the water blocks are expensive from what I've seen. SPAMAnyone know of a cheap skate way around. SPAMPreferable using Mt. Dew cans (I've got plenty of those layin' around). SPAMI hate to actually have to pay for all this stuff. SPAM

Try leaving your case open, take the sink off and just through a big loogie on to the core every five minutes
heck, just piss on your system, lol!.....im only kidding, that is grotesquely disgusting, i would never do that! It was a random statment after i saw the lugie thing, i started cracking up!!! I laught just imagining that! SPAMBut please, dont pee on your comp, thats just not right...(im sick huh!)

I have considered doing that for the site but them I realized that piss would probably be conductive. HMM :-[

The worst part about peeing on the processor would be the ammonia smell as it evaporated :P. SPAMAnd if you got on the power supply you'ld fry the family jews SPAM:o .

Ahh, but your comp would have a nice tinted yellow glow to it. AND the stickyness of the urine would catch any bugs trying to get into your system.

it worx and it doesn't conduct too well. it even made my fans spin faster! j/k lmao, i start coughing and hawk lugie at comp, but miss cpu and hit monitor. better luck next time
HOLY CRAP!!!! LMAO!!!! im crackin up like cazy...i could just imagine a wet, green, thick, 5 ouncer sliding down the monitor, and drip.......on to F5 through F8!!!! lol

Well, to get back on topic, I tried reversing the fan ontop of the heatsink so it would suck instead of blow...
...the result.. the idle temp rose to 50 and was still moving up when i shut the comp down and put the fan back into its blow position. SPAMSo i guess its better to have it blowing.
My idle is now back to 45-46 and load is 51-52

45-46 is not bad. If you have air conditioning, turn that down to 62 degrees.

I have a basic cooling system and my temperatures are around 95F-100F on my 1Ghz. Not bad, eh? (don't worry, I am taking no credit for this) And the stability is awesome even though it is below the minimum stable temperature - Windows XP hasn't crashed on me once in about 3 months that I have been running it and 2000 went for about 9 months til I replaced the OS!
the title of this thread is rather disturbing

Thats dope vee_ess. I take it that you don't run 98

(Smoked1:) No I don't run Win98, which didn't crash for me that often either; about once a week. I think it is because they introduced a three-pin power supply to the chip in this mother board which is to keep it form overheating as easily when OC'd. So, since it isn't OC'd it runs that much cooler...my reasoning...

Interesting. I think all motherboards should be made for over clocking! GRR! >:(
