Is it the end of DOS? It is if you ask Microsoftie Bill Gates, who declared the death of the command line at the launch for the company's new Windows XP operating system. XP, which the industry hopes will reinvigorate the sagging PC market, signals a new world of digital music, streaming video and interactive Web applications for the desktop masses.

DOS is still there, windoze is a DOS shell remember
just that bill dont want us using it, but as long as doze is just a shell there is a way in
btw, ME was the first OS to kik dos
Actually as far as I was aware Win2K was the first to ditch DOS pretty much fully with NT its perdecessor doing an averagish job @ it. 2K is based on the NT Kernal.
In ME DOS was still well and truly alive as it was basically just Windows 98 3rd edition, however 2K runs a modifyed NT kernal and XP runs a modifyed 2K Kernal.
Basically DOS is dead with XP and 2K, you can still access access the command line with command.com from the RUN menu, but for all practical purposes DOS is dead.

Well, I think a command prompt of some sort is good, for those times when Windows doesn't seem to work quite right, or has files protected that you can't delete, or some other errors. SPAMThe DOS system itself has been gone since ME, Win2k, etc...but they still have some sort of command prompt...not called DOS though.

Everyone but keefe is wrong:
1. NT was the first MS OS to not use a DOS kernel, but it didn't kick DOS off the market.
2. ME did not really kick DOS off, you could still find it.
3. XP is the first to kick DOS off the market as it is the first home OS not on DOS kernel ( at least of MS OS's anyway).
%% bill should stick by xenix, so all this would never happen SPAM8)

xp still uses parts of DOS.. when you boot up your computer before XP kicks in you still see the DOS screen whizzing by with a couple of dos commands - so its still there just not in as much detail you can still cripple xp with deleting command.com so until they dont use that at all anymore they haven't really got rid of it

That screen your talking about is their OS loader. it is very similar to unix, and is not DOS, unix does and can look a lot like DOS.
Im actually a big fan of command.com
Its the fastest way to do thigs llike ping and tracert.
I mean all I do is "Windows Key">R>tracert www.address.com
easy and quick
it's more like hello XP, RIP IIS SPAM;D

what is IIS and what do you mean RIP IIS?
yeah, i dont use my mouse at all at times either, key commands are faster when you need speed.
IIS stands for Microsoft Internet Information Server and is very sensitive for DoS attacks due to it's major security lacks
(DoS stands for denial of service, that's for your next question vee_ess)
"the Corvair of Web servers, unsafe at any speed." http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-869353.html

lol. i actually did already know what DoS means, but i of course still have another question ;D, what do you use Solaris for beside using as a server?
good articles especially first one comparing Sun and MS.
also, another question ::), is that quote referring to Corvair memory? cuz if you ask me, that memory sux
Never heard of Corvair memory
For me, any memory that works properly and has life-time warranty, is absolutely OK. (inexpensive too ;)
If your memory sux, check it with different configuration/ another machine, because compatibility is usually the reason why certain memory chips don't work properly with certain mobos/CPUs/...

I dont actually use corvair, but everyone who does gets stability problems. I am using Crucial and my windows machine is like a linux box. installed XP 4 weeks ago and it hasn't crashed when it was its fault (I was screwing around with some media while it was trying to use, that is only time it crashed and it actually recovered after a while.) win2k had been going about 8 months without crashing when i switched.
I don't realy care about DOS anymore as the one game i liked won't work as it needs an ISA sound card, & i an't playing it without sound.
I half agree with Simo, other than DOS practicality in certain circumstances.
$10,000 and 20 years...3.11...Little Memphis, little changes with Mircro$hit...
Thumbs up to Chef, IIS has been a living nightmare; so is XP's firewall.
If anyone wants to get serious, OpenServer is always there (if you can't afford better). It's bad enough that Mr. Gateslocker thinks end-users stupid, not to mention any admin for offering any of his systems.
Micro$hit happens, "Where will you flush today?"

What the heck does that mean?
Sorry for my use of the German language...it is as thus:
My motto: Americans are stupid; the British are ass-kissers; Germany must rise...
As for the quote: I have seen too many innovative 50-year-old professors(Ph'Ds) kiss Gates' ass; he has destroyed innovation, or, there is no innovation in Micro$hit.

i dont understand a word you are saying. my english teacher would be proud ;). i am currently dual booting XP and RedHat Linux 7.2. I always try to crash a new operating system when i get it to see how stable it is. Linux actually crashed faster for me than win2k. weird. it is cool though and i gotta thank my friend who downloaded it on his broadband connection for me.

Ich habe zu vielen erfinderischen fünfzig Esel Einjahresprofessorkuß Herrn Gates gesehen; er beendete die erfinderische Industrie.
actually, translated word by word it means:
"i have too many developy fifty donkeys oneyearprofessorhandkiss mister gates seen , he ends the developing industry"
actually, it is no correct german sentence, it isn't even slang.
never seen such, sounds stoopid to me.
i am not able to translate it correctly cuz i get the meanin but it still is no correct sentence.
hey MMC+ seems like ya a little nazi >:(, i don't think nazis are welcome here >:(
and i don't think german is ya mthaongue, so if ya aren'T german and wanna tell us germany gotta rise, are ya stoopid? if ya aren't german and the nazis would rule the world, youz would be shit for them, just as anyone else who isn't german ::)
