Speed connection times when using a 56-Kbps modem.

Just because you still use a dial-up to connect to the Internet doesn't mean that it has to take forever to get online.

Use this tip to speed up connection time to your ISP.

For Windows 98

Go to Dial up Networking in My computer.
Right-click on My Connection (or whatever you named the shortcut).
Go to Properties.
Click on the Server Types tab.
Be sure the Logon to Network box is unchecked.
Under Allowed Network Protocols, be sure only the TCP/IP box is checked.

For Windows Me

Right-click your dialup connection.
Click properties.
Click Networking Tab.
Make sure only TCP/IP is checked for Allowed Network Protocols.
Click the Security Tab and uncheck Logon to Network.

Immediately after your password is accepted you should be online.

With Windows 98 those boxes mentioned by Admin are checked by default so you will need to uncheck them.

In ME how ever they shouldn't be. But check to make sure.

Also while you're in there click the congifure button that is either to the right or below your modem.

If you have a 56k modem select 57,600 for your maximum rate, if you have a 33.6 or 28.8 modem select 38,400 if by chance your are still using a 14.4 (and yes there are still people out there using them guys n gals) select 19,200

That will help your modem out tremendously, the default is 115,200 and basically what this is, is the throughput of data from the CPU to the Modem. This doesn't affect your connection speed. If you can imagine you're connecting in the neighborhood of 40kbps this will differ with every connection. Anyhow you connect at 40kbps this is 40,000 bytes per sec. So you can send and receive that's up and down at 40kbps. If your processor is sending data at 115,200 bytes per second you're flooding your modem buffer and making it work overtime. By slowing this down you create a happier modem that can better handle the data being sent to it.

Always remember to check for the latest drivers for your modem too as there will always be updates. Even if you just bought it, check the manufacters web site for updates.

A good place for modem help is http://www.56k.com and another is http://www.modemhelp.org and of course you can always post your questions here too.

Another great modem website is http://www.modemhelp.net
They have a huge init string and error information database. SPAMI use the site all the time.

Thanks! that worked well into making my pings a little more stable and droped down the rate of package loss. Cheers :)
