Of course you can have a look at AMD's Buyers Guide.

Personally I have successfully built up an AMD Athlon XP 1500+ System with an EliteGroup ECS K7S5A.

If you can wait for another month or two, I can probably tell you how my system building goes. SPAMI was speaking to an AMD rep yesterday during one of their Customer Appreciation events here and he was saying to hold off on buying until about January. SPAMPrices should fall again during that time. SPAMI've got my eye on an Athlon XP 1800+ and a Soltek SL-75DRV2 mobo. SPAMMy problem is that I can't locate anybody here in the U.S. that sells this board. SPAMSo far, I can only find Canadian businesses selling them. SPAMI guess I'll have to wait until it gets released to the U.S. market. SPAMAnybody know of any U.S. based businesses that have the mobo for sale?

Well, it looks like my plans on giving feedback on the Athlon XP and the Soltek mobo is most likely canned right now. SPAMI was the fortunate recipient of a MSI 645 Ultra mobo while attending one of the local tech seminars. SPAMToo bad the guy before me won the P4 2.0 GHz (socket 478) chip. SPAM:( SPAMAt first, I didn't really know what the board was capable of. SPAMAfter checking a few reviews about it, I was pretty impressed with the performance and decided to keep it.
It's pretty slick. SPAMIt sports the SiS645 chipset for the Intel P4's. SPAMIt has support for SDRAM PC100/133 and DDR memory up to DDR333 (PC2700). SPAMIt's the closest thing to Intel's i850 chipset as far as performance is concerned...according to Tom's Hardware. SPAMEven Intel's new i845D has to play catch up to the chipset on this board.
So, since the Athlon/Soltek discussion will be indefinitely postponed, I was wondering if anybody wants to hear about this hardware set up? SPAMI am planning on building a new system probably around next week. SPAMActually, I was thinking of doing a web page project going along the "How to Build a PC" type theme. SPAMI can remember how I used to wander around the web in search of sites that would cater to my lack of PC building knowledge. SPAMI'd like to contribute back and put something up for those that are just beginning to start off as well.
In any case, would anybody be interested in hearing about this? SPAMLet me know and I'll post things up once I build the system.
Yeah defidently keep us upto date on the project.
Might be an idea to start a new thread about it though. ;D
The webpage sounds like a cool idea. SPAMIt was pages like that that guided me through my first PC building steps and eventually to IT as a career, so I think for my next box I will do something similar to "give back" something as you put it.
Its also a good idea because alot of the pages up there are for older Systems, and while the base info may still be accurate (CPU goes in the MOBO etc etc) having pictures that look nothing like the system your working with is VERY confusing. SPAM(I put together my first PII system working off some piccys for building a 486 I found on a website.LOL)

Man, I wish I could get an Athlon XP chip. SPAMWell, I guess I could've sold the MSI mobo but since it's free...you can't beat a free mobo. SPAMSo, after finding out what the mobo can do, I just went and got the P4 chip. SPAMIf anyone else out there is going to build one I'd like to know how it goes.

How did you get that motherboard for free?

I got the mobo free when I was attending a tech seminar hosted by MSI, Microsoft, Intel, Iomega, Canon, SMC, a local vendor, and a couple of smaller companies. SPAMThey were all showcasing their new hardware/software. SPAMOne I definitely wanted was this 4-port KVM switch by Iogear. SPAMVERY nice! SPAM
Anyway, they held drawings at the end of the seminar.
Among the prizes were copies of Windows XP Home, a couple of MS games, Maxtor's 40 or 80 GB Firewire drive, a KVM switch, a GeForce 3 card from eVGA, a P4 2.0 GHz chip, the MSI Ultra 645 mobo I won, and other stuff.
It's funny, the guy that won the P4 chip asked me if I wanted to sell my mobo to him after the seminar...hahaha! SPAMI should've asked him if he wanted to sell the chip to me instead. SPAM;D SPAMAll in all, it was pretty good. SPAM
