I have a Sony PCG-FX140 laptop. SPAMIt came loaded with WinME. SPAMI have a Conexant-Ambit SoftK56 Data/Fax ICH modem at which I could connect to the Internet at 49.3 kbps. SPAMI upgraded to WinXP which now I can only connect at 31.2 kbps. SPAMI upgraded my drivers but nothing seems to help. SPAMI would appreicate any insight that you can give me. :(

Load win98 on your system. Give manufactures a year or two to come out with descent winXP drivers
Appears to me that if you upgraded to XP and then your modem vendor had XP drivers for your particular modem, you should be back to 49.3 or there-abouts.
Did you remove the old drivers first ? Then double check all your modem settings ? Did you try updating the driver and pointing the update to the Modems XP driver location ? You may have to totally remove the modem and re-install. Also check the phone line connections etc ?
Sounds to me like a driver problem. Hopefully others will have some input and helpful info.
I'm definitelly agree with U235. Monet became another victim of MS driver mess.
Now, what about that modem/surf boosting software. Seems to be total crap.
Anybody tried sth that REALLY worked ???
Cheers
Chef
monet,
Tried to find XP drivers for your modem, finally gave up, couldn't find one at all. Be sure you have the SPAMcorrect XP driver with the correct XP initialization string. Also check to see if it is the same problem with laptop on batteries or just on the AC source. If just on the AC source, it could be a Power Supply 50 hz interference problem.

The simplest thing to try first is to set the initialization string to &F which sets your modem back to factory standards and slow the throughput to 57,600.
And just for curiosity sake, try downloading the latest the Win98 drivers and install them and see what happens?
I do not have an XP box here or I would try it for you so have a go at it, can't be any worse than you already are right?

I tried blowing the modem out completely and letting windows find the modem. SPAMThat didn't work it kept reconginizing the modem right off the bat which is on com 3. SPAMI tried adding the modem myself it keeps asking for file HSF_WXP located on my Win 2000 insulation disk. SPAMThen if I get passed that I try to direct it were the drivers are located and it states that it can not find requested file. SPAMIt also keeps trying to put it on Com 1. SPAMI have a laptop as stated above but I keep going to sites that wants to my chip set numbers were do I find that. SPAMAlso I go to sites that say I need to change my init strings. SPAMHow do I do that and were so I do that? SPAMI am sorry to keep asking so many questions, but I am just trying to learn. SPAMPlease excuse spelling I work deep nights and it is close to my bedtime.
I am assuming that it is an internal modem?
If that is the case then get an external.....might help..
Hi monet,
Not sure which OS you presently have, if WinME came on the machine, and you upgraded to WinXP, then you mention Win 2000 in above post. If you currently have XP loaded, you probally do not have a XP driver and that is/could be the problem.
But to find your chipset, do this:
With the modem off-line, go to :
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Modems>Diagnostics
When the system has finished testing the modem there will be an entry in the results box that should let you know what chipset is on the card.
Also make a note of line 13 and line 15, in the display box, this will further describe your modem.
Other things related, the speed you are describing is not actually the 'connect speed' but is the speed at which the modem is communicating with the computer on.
To find your true connection speed , go here:
------------
Your Modem Speed (http://www.dslreports.com/tools)
--------------
It is probally a winmodem, as windows detects mostly winmodems. You should try connecting several times as winmodems will connect at a different speed each time.
As for as ports, 1,3,5,7,9, and 11, are the same except with different assigned machine addresses. Look in control panel/device manager for any IRQ conflicts, or any yellow splats.
There are volumes of variables that could cause your problem and here is a link for you to check out, hopefully somewhere in there you will be able to identify, isolate and correct your problem, whatever it may be.

Goodluck to you !
