hi,
i`m planning to buy some monitor and i am wondering what i should choose...One of those pretty cheap 15 '' lcd panels, for example:
VIEW & VIEW 15 15INCH BLACK TFT LCD PANEL 1024X768 75HZ 16 M,
DAEWOO L15D 15IN TFT LCD PANEL 1024X768,
or rather traditional one?

thanks for any sugestions!

Cheap LCD is not a good idea, since it wouldn't be absolutely cheap, and you'll get low quality gadget (burned pixels, no sharp, poor game & video quality).
The prices are still high, so if you are looking for good LCD I strongly recommend Philips (slightly expensive, but worst it)
And you probably noticed that the difference between top quality & average displays is not huge at all.
So for an average LCD (15",1024-768,75,16M) I can recommend Samsung, LiteOn, ViewSonic, Acer(?), Tatung but obviously not Daewoo

Good luck
Chef

p.s. Ask for 3 yrs warranty and watch for burned pixels (seriously)

In my opion, I would only buy a LCD monitor if i really needed the desk space, or I was made of money. SPAMWhy spend 500 bucks on a 15 inch LCD, when you can get a 21" CRT for the same price? SPAMI would rather have a bigger monitor that a flatter one.

just my 2 cents

Are you serious keefe ??
21" CRT, think of the people that spend 10-12 hrs upon the screen. This is not about desk space, this is about when your eyes start burning thanks to damn CRT monitor. I feel absolutely fine even with 15" CRT @ 1024/32/75

I was also considering to purchase LCD only from that reason, well, that and maybe to attract chicks ;)

Cheers

p.s. If I would have $$$ I would get TFT right now ........

yeah it all depends on your application. for me, like keefe, a 21" would be way more practical cuz i dont spend log stretches in front of the dang machine, probably cuz it is restarting a bunch again. but like chef said if you plan on spending long stretches regularly, get the lcd. if you are going to do it but not that regularly get a good vid card and get a CRT, but with high refresh rates.

dont get an lcd cuz of the power, by the time you save enough money you will be able to get an OLED (Organic LED). those will use much much less power cuz they aren't backlit, and are virtually indestructable by normal use. little bit of a flashforward. he he he

Power ? are you kidding. LCD is the most power-saving screen, just think of the laptops.
I've also heard about O.L.E.D., it allows to create incredibly thin & flexible screen, you can roll it like a paper or use underwater, but boy it's gonna take time until these would be available & cheap ... Meanwhile, the TFT is gonna be much cheaper in next 2-3 years, CRT's in other hand would be even cheaper then now.

Well, I don't think the flat panel monitors are yet economical for the quality needed. I have one here- 15 in and it reminds me of the first VGA graphics that came out in the 80's, somewhat grainey.
As for 21 in ? How far back from the monitor do you wish to sit ? A 15-17 in is about max size for monitors - given the area SPAM( real estate ) of most computer work stations.
Of course you could project on a 27 X 36 in screen , but where would you sit ?
With conventional 15 - 17 in monitors running 100 to 200 US$ for top quality, I would opt for that and hold off the flat panels for awhile.

It depends on monitors quality. I remember first 15" TFT's were totally disaster, so our company returned half of them. But for manufacturers listed in my first message the quality was tested by me personally (not Acer) on games, videos, dos graphics. no complains or even better then usual 17", I actually was thinking to purchase Philips or Tatung.

If you want kick ass quality you have to invest in digital TFT + digital VGA card (there was a nice set by Creative ~ 8 mth ago)

Bought 2 NEC 1700v flat screens one for my giel and one for me, got rid of both of our 21" monitors, and we love our lcd screens! First off I work 10-12 hours on the pc a day, my eyes feel allot better than they ever did at the end of the night, also our power bill went down on average $25 a month after getting rid of them. Our 17" screens have the same screen size as a 19" crt. Also another benifit is you can get away with running a little less of a video card and still have awsome performance! FOr they run best at 1280x1024. Also last time we moved it is very nice to slip a 10 pound monitor into a slim case to take to another location rather than busting a gut moving two 80 pound monitors *LOL*!!! Below is a photo of my monitor and desk area.

I agree - that's not what I meant. I meant, if you are going to get an LCD because you want to save on your electricity bill, it's not yet near worth it. It would take around 40 years of continuous use to make up the difference in the price. Sorry about the dis-clarity in my previous post  .

Personally, I'd recommend either anything made in Tatung factories in China (there's only about 4 factories in the world who make LCDs), or the new Panasonic LCD monitors. High contrast ratios, high resolutions, and the options for the Panasonic (PanaView) monitors have TV tuners, DVI, and/or composite inputs!

I don't know if they make desktop flat panels, but in my experience sharp makes the best (and brightest) LCD's around. If they don't sell monitors try to find one from another manufacturer using a sharp panels, they really are the best available.

I hear they (LCD's) are bad for gaming.. are they that bad? whats the difference... also my eyes hurt on this thing so i've been thinking about it.

well... LCD monitors are only good at their maximum resolutions

anything below is fuzzy... because the crystals are made for the max res. size

LCD screens have a slow response rate
especialy for the cheapies

there isnt much point in buying a cheap one

but if u want a med range, i could introduce you to the SyncMaster 760vTFT from Samsung
very budget yet good for standard use and normal gaming

there isnt really much point...
if u want to play games, stick with a CRT
new CRTs saves quite a bit of space compared to old ones
shorter and flatter
and sharper too

My NEC 1700v plays games flawless, easy on the eyes, and runs and I can push it to 80hz, which is quite awsome for an LCD. I have had two of them for about 6 months now and they have both been perfect with no lost pixles. A+ for nec / mitsubishi on this product. And yes it saves a crapload of power over my 2 old 21" monitors and I have about 50% more desk space :) Cost a bundle but was worth every penny.

Cheap LCD's are bad for gaming!
Depends on the specs but newer high-end LCD's have response times similar to a good CRT.
But they cost more, so does a good CRT,but they last longer, don't kill you eyes, save power and have excellent resolution.
some people need cheap, some people want cheap, but after using a quality monitor (LCD or CRT)you'll never go back

excatly, I will never go back to a lower end monitor, I shelled out around $700 each for my NEC lcd panels and they were worth every penny. Good investment.

accurate image.. you said you can get it to 80 hz? it says max is 60.. or do you use it at a lower refresh rate, someone else said that makes it fuzzy

No mine is a NEC 1700V, mine is the high performance version, stock it runs 75hz, I can run it at 80hz and notice no difference in quality.

Oh buy the way in case your wondering how I get 80hz and not 85, I use powerstrip to dial it in, I can actually increase frequency if I want to even more than 80 but choose not to. It is running at 80.030 hz right now crystal clear :)

I've been using a Mag LT565 since last christmas, and I've been very happy. Yea, it's one of the cheapest ones, but I find the quality MUCH sharper then my old 19". The only problems I have it with is some of the really weird resolutions of my old dos emulations weren't supported, and it looks a bit fuzzy in resolutions below 1024x768(but thats only really noticiable on the windows desktop) Other then that, I have MUCH more space on my desk, my room isn't nearly as hot as it used to get, and my eyes feel much less strained...

Don't say anything about the fingerprints, you can only see them in the picture!
