having a bit of a problem with a new vid card, hoping someonehere could help. took out old ati card, uninstalled everything related to it, put in new Geforece4 MX440 64meg card and booted her up. installed the driver which made me reboot after it installed. as it booted up again, it brought up the Add new device wizard for installing the monitor!!! and as it did that it froze! rebooted her and it did it again. so i started her up in safe mode and everythings fine. start it up in normal and it freezes. any suggestions? Could be refresh rate or a monitor specific setting since safe mode works which loads generic settings.
Just a thought.
Remove all monitors from Device manager in safe mode, then pick pnp or standard @75.
Maybe few registry settings ... if you're familiar with
Good luck

go into safe mode and go to start, control panel, click system, hardware, (if running win nt, 2k, or xp, click device manager). at this point you should see a hardware directory, if you dont, click "view connections by type" (if you are in win nt, 2k, or xp, click view and then select it). go to SPAMdisplay adapter and uninstall all, and go to monitors and uninstall all. then reboot normally and install video card driversbut if it asks to restart, tell it you'll restart later, install monitor and then restart. give more info about your type of computer and OS and other stuff. it could be a conflict possibly or maybe just not compatible standards.

Hey Kaula, thanx for helping =). SPAMIt is actually me who has the problem. I've been trying to set up my card (PNY Verto GeForce 4 MX440) for about 2 days.. I have a HP Model 8495 Pentium 3, 550 Mhz. My former card is an onboard ATI Rage 128 VR AGP 2X on an HP Pavilion MX75 monitor. This is what I did to install my card: First off, I uninstalled the drivers for my ATI card using add/remove programs and then I uninstalled the card using the device manager. Then, I switched to Standard VGA mode. Then I shutted down and disabled my ATI card by switching a jumper setting on my motherboard. Next I inserted my GeForce into the AGP slot. After booting, I installed Direct X 8.1 and then the drivers for my card. To finish the installation, it asks me to reboot. However when I do, and my desktop begins to appear, the "Add New Hardware" wizard pops up and freezes my computer. What is going on??

As far as I know, my GeForce 4 should be compatible with my computer. I went to the PNY site and did the Performance Analyzer for my computer regarding the cards and it said my computer is compatible with my GeForce card. However, in my BIOS settings, I do not see any AGP settings.

I have Windows 98. By using my System Configuration Utility (by running msconfig), I've located the problem but I don't understand what it could be (you can run the SCU by typing "msconfig" in run in your start menu). First off, I did a selective start-up. My computer freezes whenever I allow the boot folder in my system.ini to be processed. My computer does not freeze when I allow the other things to be processed (Startup, Win.ini, Autoexec.bat, Config.sys). Only the boot folder in my System.ini causes my system to crash. But, if I do not allow the boot folder to be processed then my GeForce won't finish it's installation. Am I confusing you guys?? This is basically what I did: After installing the drivers, it asks me to restart to finish installation. I press no because if I do then it will just freeze when it boots up again. Then, I go into my System Configurator and disable the boot folder in my System.ini. Then I restart and my computer does not freeze, BUT, my card does not finish installation. What is going on?

Maybe I should exchange my card for a GeForce 2 MX400 PCI card?

This is a shorter version of what is wrong: I install my drivers, it asks me to restart, when it boots up and gets to my desktop, it freezes. And why don't I see any BIOS settings for my AGP card??

Hi folks,
Pardon the newbie, this is my first post to a forum so I hope I'm getting this right. SPAM;D
Had a quick scan through of the Geforce4 MX440 card problems. SPAMI've had similar problems with some kit I've upgraded recently (graphics card, modem and sound card). SPAMThe problems seems to be the new hardware wizard (I was running Win 98 then upgraded to Win ME, had same problem on both). SPAMInstalling the new hardware often requires a reboot, and my PC hung at the add new wizard. SPAMThe only way I found around this was to add the drivers for the hardware through the hardware's own setup files. SPAMOften the add new hardware wizard pops up just after you do that, but is able to run through normally.
Hope this helps :)

Hey... um.. how do I add the drivers for the hardware through the hardware's own setup files?? Are you talking about running the setup.exe file on the card's CD?? Explain it to me PLZ!! Thanx you Soltan!! SPAM;D

i am thinking that the add new hardware wizard is not coming up for the GF4 ;), but it is coming up for the ATI, as your motherboard says it is their to the OS if it is onboard which it sounds like it is. That would also explain why it freezes 8), as it is waiting for a response that the mobo won't allow. re-install your ATI drivers with the ATI chip enabled, and your GF4 out, do not uninstall the ATI but just disable it so windows knows what it is, and then install the GF4, and tell us what happens.

I already tried that SPAM:P. I disabled my ATI card by using the jumper and then I installed my GeForce. After it told me to reboot and my computer started up again, it froze at the desktop when the wizard popped up. And actually the wizard does not come up for either my GeForce or ATI; it comes up for my monitor... What it does is it begins to search for software for my monitor and it freezes. But, it does it sucessfully when I have my ATI card in... huh?? SPAM???

Hi Guys, I assume this is still ongoing. SPAMSorry I could not get back to you earleir Ragnatron. SPAMThe card should have come with a CD on which should be a setup file for hte drivers, or at the very least a .inf SPAMfile for the card (chances are there are probably lots of them, you may have to take an educated guess as to which is correct). SPAMIf you need to install the .inf drivers, just double click or right click and select install.
Once the drivers are installed Windows will use the device OK, but may out of sheer bloody mindedness insist on running its own add new hardware wizard. SPAMGuess it doesn't like being ursurped SPAM:) SPAMIt almost seems like Windows will only install the drivers if it's already got them, another Bill Gates special I guess. SPAMLet us know how you get a long.
As to why it works OK with the ATI card I suspect that it knows which monitor you were using then, but when you install a new card it has to reset everything. SPAMI suppose that make makes some sense since not all monitors support all refresh rates, and if you were to keep the old monitor settings youmay end up with a blank screen if you had changed monitor as well. SPAMSuspect this may be off topic a bit now, or I'm rambling again :) SPAMMust learn to shutup :)
