get a good motherboard and you will be able to d everything fast, spend the same amount of extra dough on any other part and it will do one part better. but that is if you are building it. tell if you are building or buying a system

Building the PC.
Can you provide the model and brand name too? Would be easier for me that way ;)

motherboards...I would go with one made for overclocking cuz they are usually the most stable whether or not you OC. Abit, Asus, and MSI are all real good mobo's for athlons. do you want the athlon xp or the t-birds (to show specific models)?

also: do you want DDR or SDRAM?

either way, I would get one with the KT333 chipset, or for less moolah, one with the KT266A chipset.

the KT333 superior features are 333mhz FSB (166 ddr), can be overclocked 230mhz, Ultra ATA133 support, AGP 8X, and USB 2.0 support.

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 PC2100 Kingstone *dont need any better ram since its for word processing a some 3dgaming*
40GB Maxtor 7200rpm *whatever*
Cheapest GF4 Ti4200
MSI KT266a Pro2 SPAM
On Board sound is great on that MB, if you want outstading quality go with Audigy.

and so on, the system isnt fastest but wont cost you much.

EOE shows a good config, but i wouldn't put the money into an athlon xp 1800+, instead i would go with a little slower cpu and the kt333 mobo, cuz you get better performance when you upgrade the cpu and future cpu's mayy not even support less than 333 FSB's
