Everytime I run quake 3 .. after about 20 or 30 minutes usually .. the game will lockup .. and the system will as well .. I cant ctrl + alt + del .. the keyboard numpad wont flash on / off .. etc .. its basically halted

Now I've tried getting the latest drivers from www.nvidia.com and the beta from www.riva3d.com and www.3dchipset.com and none of those work .. I've gotten the latest media drivers for my sis735 chipset (from windows update).. no go.. I've also gotten the latest AGP drivers for the sis735 as well ..

I havent noticed it freezing on any other games .. but then again I dont play them as long ..

I dont think it is overheating .. or at least i would HOPE not .. considering I havent overclocked it at all .. I just got it today ..

Quake 3 played solid on my 3D Prophet II Geforce 2 MX .. It just wasnt fast enough for me.

I have an amd xp 1700+ on a k75sa .. SPAM512 mb of ram (pc133) and windows xp pro with all the latest patches from windowsupdate

any ideas would be appreciated.

i dont mean to correct you, but you vid card is either a GeForce2 MX400, or a GeForce4 MX 420 (or 440, or 460), and it would be more helpful as to give advice.

when it freezes, restart it immediately, and check the in the BIOS for temperature of your fans as i believe that chipset incorporates.

Yeah its an MX440 .. sorry i was going to modify the message but since i posted it as a guest .. I couldnt ..

in any case I took the case off .. and it hasnt crashed yet at a lower resolution .. go figure ..

It still really pisses me off as well that the framerates werent exactly what i was expecting ...

I cant seem to get over 100 fps :-/ .. kinda weird .. and when i zoom in on rocket smoke my frames per sec drop to 30 and 20 .. now is that to be expected on a geforce 4...

(but that was at 1280x1024 and not 1024x768 .. but still .. )

anyhow .. I dont know what to think .. SPAMI probably got ripped off.

i belive that your video card is not cool enough which is probably why when you took your case off it worked without freezing, by getting cooler. you might want to try keeping lots of openspace by your comp with its case off and see how it is doing. also check out your BIOS options and see what your card supports.

It's the K7S5A, not many options. Crappy AMI bios.

Make sure you have the SiS AGP drivers loaded.

YOur problem could arise from heat, I suggest removing the HSF on your cards and reapplying thermal paste/adhesive. Cooler Master Premium or Artic Silver II/III work the best. You should also check what you are running the game in. Try running Q3 in Direct X rather than Open GL. If Open GL is the problem it is in all likelihood a software problem and you'll just have to sit tight for a patch to come out, or a bios update or something. Email Visiontek tech support, and also try removing all previous drivers (which can have a retroactive effect on your system)

a friend of my had a problem with his gf4 mx card and we wound out it was the heat. SPAMThose cards produce a lot of heat and if ur case is hot inside then the card has no place to get cool air so there is no point of having a fan on that video card because it will just keep sucking in the hot air... work on the cooling of ur case and see what happens.
