View Full Version : Abit KT7A-RAID problems???

OK...here's the situation. SPAMI have an Abit KT7A-RAID board with 512MB SDRAM, AMD T'bird 1GHz, 46.5GB IBM HDD, Leadtek GeForce2 GTS Pro graphics, etc.
A few weeks ago I noticed that the fan noise was significantly diminished inside my case. SPAMUpon inspection I found that my graphics card fan had quit alltogether. SPAMLeadtek was wonderful...standing behind the card and sending me a brand new GTS Pro. SPAMI popped it back into the machine and I still get the diminished fan sound and no beeps...rebooted and the fan sounds came back to normal...even a long beep, but still no video.
So I am wondering...does this sound like a problem with the KT7A...or perhaps with my AMD T'bird...or ??? SPAMEverything was working fine until the fan on the GTS stopped...now nothing seems to work correctly. SPAMAll the fans are spinning (heatsink fan, graphics card fan, case fans x 2, northbridge fan). SPAMSeems strange that at first no boot up "beeps"...then one longer than normal beep on one of my boot up attempts...but all the time no video. SPAMI even swapped out monitors to see if that might be the problem, but neither monitor lights up.
Any suggestions???? SPAMCould it be a failed memory problem? SPAMAny suggestions will be most welcomed. SPAMI really don't want to have to buy all new parts swapping out one part at a time until I find the culprit...but that may be the only solution.
Thanks for the input ahead of time...chaplndave

I have the same exact mobo, except maybe different version (I have 1.0). I am pretty sure that, like many mobo's, the beeping signals that it is not a mobo problem, but it is likely a RAM or processor problem. It won't have anything to do with your hard drive because it checks the HD later. It also won't beep if it is your monitor. You might want to email Abit directly: technical@abit-usa.com

UPDATE: SPAMI decided not to fool with troubleshooting the Abit board as I had an IWill XP333-R board and a stick of Mushkin PC3200 DDR lying around. SPAMI have rebuilt the box with the motherboard, memory, a 1GHz Athlon T'bird (will update sometime in the future), floppy, CD-ROM, and a 75GXP IBM 46.5GB HDD...oh yea, and the new GeForce2 GTS Pro card that Leadtek just sent me.
Once I had everything in place, starting out with just the graphics card and the above pieces, I decided to plug it in to see what would happen. SPAMNOTHING HAPPENED!!! SPAM...and then the two case fans and the northbridge fan went on really quietly with the processor fan starting a little and stopping, starting a little and stopping. SPAMNeedless to say, I shut everything down pronto! SPAMDoes this sound like a power supply problem to you? SPAMThat is the only thing I can figure out. SPAMThe fan on the proc was not working...not really, and the fan on the graphics card never did turn. SPAMWith the other fans on so quiet I had to look to see if they were really spinning, the only thing I can figure is that they are not getting the power they need. SPAM
Any suggestions or tips????

is your power supply AMD Approved?

Not sure if it is AMD approved or not. SPAMIt came stock with the Enlight case I purchased. SPAMIt is a Premiere Plus ATX 300 watt p/s. SPAMI will try to locate a good p/s to replace it with. SPAMAny ideas on where I can get at least a 300 watt enermax or antec p/s for a good price?

hmm I can't find anything on the power supply anywhere. It might not be amd approved.

here. Newegg has plenty of power supplies for good prices.

Sparkle dosent have the one I have (got mine from here). But so far I've had no problems with it at all.

I'd say you either have a bad powersupply, or some short somewhere. SPAMHave you check that everything is grounded? SPAMOr have you removed your cards and tried it?

Looks like it was the power supply...just as you suspected. I bought an Antec True Power 430watt ps. When I hooked everything up all fans except the fan on the heatsink. I had it plugged into a fan header. I shut the system off quickly, pulled the fan off the fan header and hooked it into a three to four pin, then to a regular power link....everything is now working fine. Amazing...troubleshooting everything and not even thinking about the power supply at first. But now that I have virtually built a new system I am reinstalling all the software and struggling with the "new system blues". More later....and thanks everybody!!! :wavey:

Thank you for telling us it is finally O.K. It gets rather annoying when you are trying to help someone with a problem, you get into it, and then you never hear from then again.

Oh believe me vee...I like to ask lots of questions...and I really enjoy posting both questions and results. I am not too much into all of the high tech testing so I probably won't be able to give you numbers, but I can tell you all generally how things are going. Who knows...someone will probably teach me how to post my specs and then I will be able to give a more complete picture...but I am a learn as you go kind of a guy. Thanks again.

If you ask me, that is the best way to be. You know what you need to almost always. Plus, you can keep up with emergin stuff too. Check out the main site when it is up, because it will have information for people at every stage to learn, but maybe just not at first. I am hoping it will become the most comprehensive computer education on the net.

Hey guys, Here is the issue...
I bought an Abit KT7A-Raid with a 1.4 GHz AMD CPU and when I got everything together, it booted up find, and sounded great. Then a couple days later after I got win2k pro installed and everything pretty much complete, it would turn on, but I wouldn't get ANY video to the monitor.
Here is what I tried:
* New video card
* New power supply
* Unplugged everything except the video card
* Reset the CMOS
* Different monitors (the monitor I am using works w/ other comps)
I tried everything above and I am out of ideas. I think I need to buy
a new mother board or something. :(
I have tried the following video cards:
* ATI Radeon 7000 (I think it is a 7000, can't see the # on the card)
* Geforce 4
* Normal 8MB Trio PCI card
Every once in awhile when I am working on it, it will work, but once I power down and then power up to make sure it works for good, it doesn't :( When it is working, I can boot to a floppy and everything works fine. I can browse with dos, check the bios settings, everything is normal.
Also, sometimes when I hit the reset key on the case I get a flash of video on the screen. Really quick, just a blue horizontal line swipes from top to bottom.
Stats of the System:
* 512 MB Ram
* Abit KT7A-Raid w/ AMD 1.4 GHz
* Duel 7200rpm 80GB IBM drives
* HP DVD100i
* SoundBlaster Line!
I would really appreciate your help guys!!!
Thanks a lot!

That appears to be a problem with the actual motherboard design rather than a hardware fault - it has something to do with heat - perhaps its a safety feature [ god knows ]
i have an abit kt7a raid , hercules prophet III or something , 512 sdram (of which 256 has just failed and i think my motherboard also just died...) and had the exact same problem when i booted my pc.
Heres my question -
i was playing a video game and the whole thing just cut out - as in video feed but the fans etc kept whirring - what does this mean - mobo fault??
