A friend says to me, Ok, here's the lowdown. SPAM I have a friend who's dad works at a computer shop. SPAMHe bought all his stuff there and he put it together, and it doesn't power up at all, no lights, no motherboard action, nothing

i checked all the usual stuff, the power sw pin on the mobo, the powersupply, the board, everything is fine, I know its something basic because his dad fixed it and knows what the problem is, but he won't tell us, so he says its something on the motherboard, a setting or jumper or whatnot. SPAMHe says that its really simple, something you learn in computer certification coarses. SPAMI was just wondering if maybe you know what isn't right on the board. SPAMThere's money on this, so if you could help me, it would be greatfully appreciated. SPAM

Thanks alot.. SPAM

It might be the clear CMOS jumper. I had the same problem with my K7S5A. It wouldent power up at all, then I put the clear cmos back to normal, and it powered up fine.

Yes, that is the solution, what Uranium said, exactly what I was thinking.

It is usually the only jumper that is required to start the computer, because the jumper has two positions; one where it supplies power to CMOS to relay information, including that of power itself on; the other position is of course to reset it. You probably already knew that and it just probably was too simple to think of.

Resetting the CMOS is the only mobo solution I can think of, but a very frustrating non-power situation I had was when the power supply was set for 220V, instead of 110V.

as a point of note. Doing that can hurt the computer (setting the psu to 220v on a 110 line)

In addition to the above suggestions, remove all but one stick of ram, rotate if more than one, SPAMmake sure graphics card is seated properly, remove all but essential cards to try. Remove the CMOS battery for atleast 30-40 minutes. Check the power cable and IDE SPAMcable. But I'm sure all this has already been tried.

yeah, but he said it was a setting on the motherboard...and about the only universal setting like that on practically all mobo's (he learned that in a certification class, dealing usually with universal standards, etc.) that will influence it's powering up is the CMOS.

Well, he actually said:

"so he says its something on the motherboard, a setting or jumper or whatnot. SPAMHe says that its really simple, something you learn in computer certification coarses. "

That is " something " on the motherboard, and that covers a lot of " somethings ". Also the "computer certification courses" is a moot point, as there SPAMare lots of excellant computer geniuses that never took that course. Which means that the problem could be solved by anyone wishing to go through the " Process of elimination".

Yeah, I haven't and probably never will take a course...

What I was reffering to was the fact that IDE's won't prevent a comp from starting.

process of elimination remindes me uv me friend skywalker. he once set his psu switch to 110 volts. fatal error, in europe we mostly use 220 volt lines. a nice little flash and seering sound and the psu was gone (not really gone but literally screwed) ;D

Could you still use it after that? I imagine it probably fried the 110V switch inside. (If it is broken, you could probably fix it if you can find the burnt components and swap with a lesser PSU)

sometimes there is a jmp for cmos battery, external or
internal, should be on internal.

Also if you tell os which MB it is we could have a look
at layout.

I've passed on all the great suggestions here but have yet to hear anything back from this individual.

Gonna have to put this one in the X files if'n I don't hear back from him.

The suspense is killing me. SPAM:o

I also find it annoying/aggrevating (whatever the word is) when there is no follow through...You never know if you were of any help or not.

Agreed,

I felt like we've been left hangin, sorry guys. I just passed it on for some help from my brethrin.

See what we sometimes get for helpin? Worth it aint it SPAM;D for the ones that do get helped.

The ones that don't respond, well chalk em up for practice.

Hey, it isn't a bit your fault...Just offered us a challenge, which I am sure most of enjoyed. And you are right about the other part, it is worth helping for the ones whom we know we have helped.
