Me personally, I use FreeBSD, but there is Red Hat, Mandrake etc etc out there.

It's kinda like the PC vs. MAC thing, depends on the one you start with that you end up hanging on to I think.

Not much help there, but from my experience I have had no probs what so ever running FreeBSD and I use Apache, PHP, MySQL, Postfix and some others.

Ive used afew different flavours and when I was learning I found Redhat and Mandrake the best for newbies.
Hope that helps

I'm going to throw my vote in for RedHat. SPAMIt's pretty straight forward, and has pretty good documentation and support. SPAMAnd after you get familliar with that junk, you can always switch over to another flavor and have a new chance to mess that one up all over again :D! SPAM(Unless you're actually already a 1337 linux h4x0r, and you're trying to put on a clever rouse of being a linux newbie, which I'm sure is the case :P.)

if you actually want to learn about the OS use slack. Redhat and Mandrake will teach as much about linux as windows xp will.

i disagree with above...

MDK yea can be used as a plain alternative to Doze if u let it, you can still use CLI and learn about linux while also having a nice gui to go back to every once in a while if you really cockup and need some help off the net

im a linux n00b myself but so far everyone has recommended mdk first, then tryout slackware

I don't know why you would ever want to stain you soul with running windoze, but if you have to do it use VMWare.

Lindows isn't a windows emulator, it's another distro of Linux http://www.lindows.com/

If Mandrake is supposed to be a option for newbies, then why can't I figure anything out with it??? I havn't been able to install any packages or programs or anything. I get gtk errors, GPG signatures missing and all other sorts of problems. I see to install gtk-devel , but that will not load. Is there any help for this?

For newbies, mandrake is more handy dandy.

Ok, as a linux newbie myself, I'm going to throw my vote in for Mandrake. I tried Debian last Saturday night. I started working on it at 12:30 AM, and finished up getting KDE installed at 6:40 AM. This was a very frustrating process, to say the least.

I then formatted my Debian install, and installed Mandrake. This took about an hour, and it wasn't the least bit frustrating (except when I thought about all the time I'd wasted on Debian).

Long story short:

Use Mandrake rather than Debian for linux newbs.
