If you have the chance to still do this, I would suggest getting a Western Digital Special Edition instead of the Maxtor. It will most likely be around the same price range because the Maxtor is ATA133, but even though the WD uses slower data transfer, it beats any other hard drive in speed, and it still follows the WD legacy of stability.

No way man *LOL* I purchased my 80 ata 133 maxtor for $99.99 new and have had nothing but good luck, and in pass mark and other benchmarking software I have seen no less than 147mb/s tranfers. This drive rocks, in my last system "now my girls" I had the ata 133 40 gb that is still running perfect and very fast. I have had a few probs with western digital and will now never buy anything from them again, I use only seagate and maxtor now for my pc's :) Sorry I am very opinionated *LOL* :)

I have also had problems with a WD drive of mine. I will never buy one as well. I have an IBM drive right now and it has been perfect. Next step Ultra160.

To expensive and i have an extra ultra160 raid controller. If you know where I can get a good price on an ultra320 raid controller let me know and I'll be on it.

I'll keep my eye out but ebay is the first place i went before asking you. I saw a few drives up but they were like 300.00. I got mu ultra160 drives for 50.00. If I go with ultra 320 I will get an MB with 64Bit PCI slots.

Why not go with two ata 133 drives on a raid array?? Would be insano fast man :) I will I had another 80gb, I would be flying!

The last time I tried ATA raid it was shit. The benchmarks did nothing for me.

what raid did you runthem at..?? mirrored or like raid 0 or..?? My buddy has a 4 drive array and that think smokes most everything I have seen on the benchmarks. I would love to know more info on your scenerio :) I am not a raid expert but from the few systems I have seen running it I have been very impressed, I do know there is many many ways to run a raid array, so which did you choose for better speed..?

I used RAID0. That's the best for speed. If you run it with parity it slows down a bit. I am going to write an article on it comparing one IDE drive to three on a SCSI raid. I don't have an ATA-133 raid controller so I won't be able to use that.

Would be a cool thing :) I would love to see it! what drives will you be using..?

three seagate 9gb Ultra160 drives and hopefully an ata-133 drive. All I have right now is an ata-100 drive

DOn't ya think that is a little lopsided..?? Why not compare 1 ata 133 and then 1 ultra 160. OR then mabey 2-3 ultra 160 drives and 2-3 ata 133 drives, wel all know already who will win that contest :) scsi is very fast :) If ya need benchmarks from an ata 133 drive I have both "passamark" and also sandra for testing. Let me know ok!

I have a 40gb ata 133 and an 80 gb ata 133, also would be a good note is the cost of the drives and also the physical size the drive hold, but you probably thought of that :)

Yeah that would be great. I really think that the SCSI drives are going to blow away the ata drives. My raid controller is a cheapo one but the idea is to show people that they can afford to use a SCSi raid. I am wondering if it will increase my 3DMark scores

accurateimage

Probably not your 3d mark scores, but will help in allot of area's. My local stor has a 120 gb IBM drive for $129.99 right now out the door, and it is 7200rpm and ata100. Think I am gonna buy it for my backup system. Catch ya later :)
