HD cooling - neccessary?

Yo, i just ordered the new WD 80 mb 7200 rpm 8mb cache hd and i'm wondering.. is it really necessary to cool it? anything would help, thanks..

if your system temp is above 35c and is lack of circulation, yes

a cheap one will do
or you can make one

that would be mboard temp? .. i have one exhaust fan under my vid card.. is that enough? if not if you know a cheap way to cool it lemme know. :rolleyes:

well n/m just threw down 10 bucks on a 2 fanned HD cooler.. i wont stand for any HD overheating in MY case 8)

Yes the wd 8mb cache needs cooling, the damn thing gets blistering hot when running without circulation, I have mine in it's own bay with it's own 80mm fan "antec case makes it possible" That particular drive is the hottest I have run so far by allot. Made my maxtor ata133 drive seem cool under the same conditions.

yea i'm coolen the p4 lol i have a vantec fan rated at 3 ghz.. on the loud but safe side with that. wouldnt dare usen the stock fan at this speed.

I can't say for sure from experience, but I doubt it needs additional cooling. I did personally just order the exact same two drives you ordered, but also have two CoolerMaster CoolDrive 4002's sitting here that I intend on using with them ;).

depends on the environment the computer is in
and the circulation of the whole computer

but usualy 7200rpm hdds should be cooled to be on the safe side as often bad sectors form because the hot air above the magnetic pin raises the arm or lower it

Put it this way.. i'm using it right now without any cooling. 8) .but i ran some tests and scores were a bit low so i have a fan on the way . so conclusion------ cooling not necessary but beneficial

also if the air in the hdd gets really really hot
then there is some chance of the air disrupting the magnetic needle and can create some bad sectors...

I dont thinck that HDD cooling is necessary, it will probably give him a longer life but not much more.

Depends on the drive man, if you run one of the new WD 8mb versions your likley to start having errors because in an enclosed bay the thing can burn ya *LOL*

Does it really heat that much, my god, i have a seagate barracuda 4 40go and thats ok

yeah the WD 8mb cache drives get nasty hot with no venting, I had one in my removable hard drive bay and after about an hour of use took it out and it was blistering hot. So now I have it in an antec bay with it's own 80mm fan blowing accross top and bottom so it stay very cool.

No it is very quiet, in fact bairly noticable. I cannot put up with an overly loud system.

Mine is a bit noisy, that must be the to 120cm fans i have at the back and front one of them blowes a bit of fresh air on the hard drive thats probably why hes never too hot

i've got a double fan on it and no problems it seems.. attached is sandra scores.. seems they should be a little higher?

Yes should be much higher, try defragging the system before testing :)

odd, after a fresh defrag, then reboot and shut down everything running I get between a 32-36000 on average.

i defragged, restarted and closed progs.. still just under 30k.. i think its because i'm NTFS.. if not then i'm stumped

NTFS should be fast, I run NTFS format on everything, do you have the bussmaster drivers installed or all the board drivers for the controller..??

oh.. pcpitstop.com says fat32 is alot faster. I probably dont have the newest drivers for the controller
