View Full Version : OVERCLOCKING THE 4200 TI?
accurateimage

Hello peoples, I just recently came upon a cheap 4200 ti from pny and since I bought some more toys could not afford the 9700 at this moment, so I bought this card for just over $100 and installed it, well I have had a blask overclocking it but the prob is I pegged my powerstrip software! I cannot increase the chip clock frequency anymore and it seems to still have tons of headroom. It pegged at 332 mhz and the best I could get out of the ddr was 575 with stock sinks, the chips sink was replaced with a pure copper Tk sink. Let me know if you guys have any idea's on how to get this baby faster! I know I can get the ddr faster for the factory polished sinks suck, they are hot as hell so tommorow I am gonna slap 4 nice Tk blue sinks on that are roughly 50% larger and allot better designed. Hope to hear from ya all soon! Also anyone have links to articles concerning the overclocking of the 64mb "fast" version of the 4200???

I own one of these. I haven't tried any type of cooling but I was able to get 300/600 out of it without much trouble. About 305/620 I started getting artifacts in 3dmark2k1se so I backed it down to 300/600. Works like a charm!! (11680 3dmarks!)
accurateimage
09-19-2002, 02:19 AM
what is the resolution setting at...?? also mine is at 332 which is as high as my powerstrip will let it go and 575 is as high as the ram will go.
accurateimage
09-19-2002, 02:35 AM
scored 11230, will try to go allot higher tommorow when I actually add some real cooling to those crappy factory ddr sinks.

on 3dmark I leave everything default. I belevie this is 1024*768 16 bit. not sure though. whatever is default is what I use.
Oh try using the coolbits.reg thingy thats what I used. also- what driver version are you using? I recommend using the 40.41s they are the best so far (in my useage anyways)
accurateimage
09-19-2002, 04:04 AM
using the 40.41's, also what does the coolbits thing do and were can I get it..?? U currently use powerstrip 3.20 somthing for overclocking. I just have allot of headroom left in the card and want to take advantage of it all. Also the default is 1024 x 768 at 32bit. Keep me posted :) Cannot wait to try out the new heat sinks tommorow to see how fast I can get this thing to go :D

linkage above will give u the file and a quick tutorial (aussie style)
I'm leaving my card like it is cuz i dont want to burn anything, but next month or so i am getting a watercooling setup so I may splurge for the Vidcard block and get some ramsinks and see what she can do... >:)
Keep us posted how it goes!

Cool checkingit out to see how well it works :D
accurateimage
09-19-2002, 02:32 PM
Wow this works awsome! What I did was uninstall powerstrip, then install coolbits. The I went ahead and clocked cool bits to it's max 315 and ran the ram back at 575. Then I installed powerstrip and it saw my 4200ti as factory set at 315 / 575! So I was able to find the roof on the chip *LOL* almost thought I would not! With 0 artifacts or lockups it would run at 1280 x 1024 up to 340mhz!!!!! That is 90 mhz overclocked! I think the thermaltake pure copper heatsink with upgraded fan had allot to do with it but damn! That is insane! Also do not remember if I noted it but the chip is a revision 3 or A3. Also NOTE that in 1024 x 768 I could get it to 350mhz with no lockups, but lots of point sprites on the horse test. Damn I cannot wait until I get my hands on some real ram coolers so I can find the roof on the cheapy card, so far I am mega impressed! Now that the 4200ti is very cheap and comes in a hotrodded version with 500mhz ram it is highly reccomended for a real budget card. I give this little baby 10 /10 shirts up! Time will only tell of the new ramsinks will let me push it into the 600mhz range. SWEET!

Hey Jazz, what kind of ti do you have..??

Yo AI, where can I get some vid card memory heatsinks to put on my MSI Ti-4600? I should be able to get at least 725Mhz mem clock but I can only get it up to 700 stable.

I bought mine from thermaltake, at my local fried electronics. Very good sinks
eviltechie
09-20-2002, 03:04 AM
do those really perform well??
how are they compared to the awesome tweakmonster hfs?
and just what difference does the copper hs make?
did u buy a package of this? http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/ram/ttramkit.jpg
btw i wonder how do you put an URL link onto an image on this forum?
lol
i have lots of questions
because im waiting for the price to drop a little more before i buy my own Ti4200 from msi or asus or some other brand

I have the MSI version. It kicks quite a bit of ass, IMHO. :) I have not tried any serious overclocking like you have but it took 300/600 just fine with stock cooling (no ramsinks and stock HSF)
Like I said, once I get watercooling if I get the GPU sink with it, THEN I'll see what she can do (with ramsinks too, of course)

09-20-2002, 11:40 PM
and just what difference does the copper hs make?
Copper is a very good conductor, and therefore, conducts heat well also. It allows heat to transfer faster and more completely than more insulative heat sinks.
accurateimage
09-21-2002, 12:16 AM
That is what I have on mine right now, why order it man..? *L* fried electronics carry's it ont he shelf. Just make sure to use artic silver 3 on it. And do not use the shitty ram sinks that come with it, use the ram sinks that come with the ram kit, they are about 10x better :)
eviltechie
09-21-2002, 01:45 AM
they are the same shit... different pile
all are aluminum ram sinks
of course i know copper is better
my Globalwin CAK-38 for my athlon 1.2GHz is a pure copper cut
the thing i was asking about is u never know with thermaltake, usualy their products looks better than how it performs
and it is still in the doubtful range
so i was asking how generaly the product performs compared to for eg. the MSI's loud and powerful stock hsf on their Ti4200
accurateimage
09-21-2002, 02:51 AM
Same shit..?? *LOL* no man the ram sinks that come with the thermaltake ram heat spreader are tons better than the crappy ones that come with the card I have and one hell of allot better than the ones that come with the copper cooler kit, the copper cooler for the chip is the only thing that is copper in that set, the ram sinks are trash that come with the copper kit and not even the same size, the blue ones have about 80% more surface area on them. Not sure abotuwhat came on your board for I have not seen it.
accurateimage
09-21-2002, 02:53 AM
Oh yeah and can you push your 4200ti's chip to 340+ without problems..?? I can after installing the copper sink with silver3. Have no probs showing my 3dmark score also :D
eviltechie
09-21-2002, 02:56 PM
ive heard many good things about this Tweakmonster ram sink
http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=Bigfoot&Product_Code=2266CGRS&Category_Code=0050
it should perform well as it is made of copper alloy and plated with tin chrome
i think it should perform well but it is very expensive on the other hand...

yeah that ti4200 turbo is pretty schweet alright
especialy 8 layers of PCB!!
i didnt know it could effect overclocking... as really does alot to regulate the voltage...

09-22-2002, 11:07 PM
Well reinstalled windows 2k from an error, simple cure:) Anyways after all was said and done ran a 3dse2001 benckmark and the best my $129.99 PNY card can do is 11301!!! That is pretty damn sweet for a budget card. Saved the file for proof. Very happy with the cheapo card!
eviltechie
09-22-2002, 11:20 PM
yo jazzman, whats your 3dmark2001 SE score for the MSI one?
is the PNY overclocked?
seriously oc'ed Ti4200s are almost equal to a G4 Ti4600!!
accurateimage
09-22-2002, 11:29 PM
yeah I have mine overclocked, running 340 / 580. My ddr overclocking is not so good but my chip OC is the best I have seen so far stable on a 4200 ti. Man if they put good ddr in this board this would actually beat the albatron. Oh well :) Also note this is a R3 chip, not one of the early chips so that has a big factory in it, that and also it has a pure copper sink on it with silver 3. That little fan actually moves some air!
eviltechie
09-22-2002, 11:49 PM
just dug up another review of the Albatron's Ti4200 P Turbo
this is the 128mb
more headroom for OC
cause default DDR clock is lower than 64MB's
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1226
from the trustworthy PCSTATS
im wondering, does ur PNY have resistors standing between a pair of DDR RAM?
most of the Ti4200s do
making the heatsink for memory hard to put on as ive heard
it doesnt seem so with albatron's card
heres MSI's
http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/msigf4ti4200_top.jpg
for the pair of ram up top, see that resistor there standing between them?
like a third wheel??
if i buy a MSI, id have to get those single ramsinks from tweakmonster...
accurateimage
09-23-2002, 12:12 AM
Yeah but they are so low profile they did not get in the way of my sinks at all.
eviltechie
09-23-2002, 12:22 AM
really?
id have to go my own Ti4200 first
THEN
decide what heatsink to get
should i use frag tape?
accurateimage
09-23-2002, 12:44 AM
I am using the tape for now until I can get some artic silver epoxy for the sinks, that stuff is good.
eviltechie
09-23-2002, 12:48 AM
im a little worried when it comes to permanent stuff like the Arctic Silver Adhesive...
things could get messy...
but ofcourse i would be very very careful if i were doing it

i can assure everyone that this topic can go much longer
because im planning on buying my Ti4200 end of this month...

09-23-2002, 12:53 AM
is it DVI + VGA? or dual VGA??
how about adaptors for s-video out?
i dont like s-video very much
because the cable is so expensive for running distance...
id rather have coaxial... even though the quality is bad
im still struggling on the decisions..
ill have to talk to my parts supplier, see what he says
Power Colour is quite cheap too
accurateimage
09-23-2002, 12:58 AM
I have mine running to the tv on svideo and it rocks, it can support running both the tv and my monitor in 4 different modes which is awsome. Also it came with no cables but you can buy those seperate. Here is some more specs on it http://www.pny.com/home/products/Vcard_ti4200.cfm
So far I am 100% happy with the cheap little card. Does everything exactly as I want it to.
eviltechie
09-23-2002, 01:04 AM
well there are no Geforce 4 cards that have coaxial out anyways
the comp is in my room and the TV is in the living room
it would be quite a distance to run s-video cable and signal would be weak for this kind of setup
but what the hell is the purpose of hooking my card to tv anyways, i dont have much needs for it
unless i want to record some stuff onto vhs....
(porn for example)

physical evidence is not good... :P

09-23-2002, 01:32 AM
I download movies "screeners for legal purposes" 24-7 and watch them all the time, that is why I have mine hooked up to the tv. My run is over 30 feet I would say, but the signal is still very good, you get a tiny bit of screen roll but it is not noticeable when the movie is paying, just when the screen is black, my fav thing is I can be working on the pc and playing a movie on the tv at the same time! Or I can watch the movie on my screen and my girl or friends can be watching it in the other room if I am working at the same time, it has all the functions I want.

My scores? WELL
Stock, the card was about 9300. This is at 250/512 settings. System running at 133fsb*12.5 mult for 1666 mhz. (XP 2000+)
With the system at 144FSB (1800mhz, XP2200+ speed) and the Card at 300/600, I got this:
http://www.eagle5.net/store/high.jpg
This of course, Is with stock MSI HSF and NO ramsinks. Completely stable. runs at this speed for the past.... 4 or 5 weeks now. Not bad for 140$! :)
accurateimage
09-23-2002, 10:22 AM
Dude you have to actually show all of your setting, not just the final score, I can get over 12000 if I set it up to do so *L* Next time take a shot of your settings in the program next to your score, it also identifies your card.

09-23-2002, 11:06 AM
sorry. I am new to this kind of thing, I've never had hardware worth "showing off" before, so I dont really know how to do it right.
SOOOOORRRRYYYYY.
seriously- I dont mean to seem egotistical or have a "mine is better than yours" frame of mind at all, you asked for my scores, I gave them to you. simple as that.
In any event, if its that big of deal to you and you think i'm lying or whatever, I'll take another run tonight when I get back to my place. and take a full picture this time.
accurateimage
09-23-2002, 01:53 PM
Right on dude :) Never said you were lying and showing of is what places like this are about *LOL* I was just letting you know what you should display when it comes to benchmarks. I get questioned all the time and one guy even leading me to beleive I had an underclocked 2200+ and really not a 2100+ *LOL* Just had to show the correct stuff and it was all good. If your 4200 can reach those scores that is killer :D IS that under xp or w2k..?? I cannot push mine any further. 340 / 580 is the absolute best it will do with no artifacts or lockups, just 5 mhz faster on the chip or DDR does not work so I have it pegged. While my chip has the fasted clock right now out of any 4200ti I have seen, the ram lack a bit compared to other cards which really hurts my scores. from getting up to the very top. I am working on other cooling methods for it to try to push it over the limit :D
Jazzman
09-23-2002, 02:08 PM
I run winxp. and I agree, the 3.6ns ddr on these cards is what makes them SOOOO saweeeet! That and its pretty red PCB mmmmm looks better than those new radeon things! (but doesn't perform as well :() ah well.
accurateimage
09-23-2002, 02:43 PM
The all red would look killer in my girls MSI setup, all my stuff is silver with blue / indiglow lighting so red would look funny. The purple PNY looks pretty decent with blue sinks and copper cooler.
Jazzman
09-23-2002, 03:49 PM

09-24-2002, 11:42 AM
Just go slow first with the chip in 5 mhz steps until you start seeing artifacts, then back it off 2-3mhz or until they go away on 2001se. Then up the ram in 5 mhz increments from your current settings until the same happens or it freezes then back it off 5 mhz. Then you will have the card at its' peak which is pretty amazing!

CiKoTiC
09-26-2002, 12:52 PM
Eviltechie, I have to say I am VERY impressed with the Thermaltake copper cooler. I was a little taken back when I first saw how thin 2 of the ram sinks are but they seem to be doing their job.
Also, the fan on the heat sink came with a 3 pin connector that would not plug into the 2 pin connector on the video card itself. I had to use the included adapter to plug it directly into my pwr supply. It's really not a big deal but you have to remember to plug it back up if you ever take the video card out.
The fan and heatsink are of very good quality. The stock fans on the G4 cards put out around 3-4 CFM and the Thermaltake puts out 10 CFM which is very nice.
Before I added the kit, I wasn't able to go above 310MHz on the core and 710MHz on the memory. I can now do 320 and 725 respectivly.
Does adding the kit help performace? You bet it does, my 3D Mark score went up from 12705 to 12870 so I would say it's worth every penny.
Hope this helps. :)
EDIT: I thought I would post a pic for you showing the heat sinks on the card to demonstrate the 2 different sizes.
accurateimage
09-26-2002, 02:06 PM
Sweetness man :) I loved my cooler also but chose not to mess with the ram sinks that came with it, I thought the backside ones were a joke and threw them in the drawer with the pile of heatsinks I have *L* I just mainly wanted the copper cooler :) ANd awsome on those scores! Man having the ram so fast really must rock!
CiKoTiC
09-26-2002, 02:09 PM

accurateimage

Dude I have no idea, looked like they chose them to fit the plastic package *LOL*Plus they kinda mislead ya for the package states somthing like copper coller set or somthing like that so I thought it was all copper even the sinks which would have rocked but looked closer and found goofy anodized aluminum sinks, the ones on my PNY were actually better stock! That is why I bought the nice thermaltake ones out of the ramcooler set, I think they are very snazzy and work well for even my stock sinks got very very warm almost hot to the touch when overclocked.
The new ram sinks run cool especially with an 80mm fan on top and an 80mm on bottom hehehe :)

No doubt they could have made it the best product in this catagory if they hadn't cheezed out on the ram sinks.
Oh yea, AI, I sent you a message via Yahoo messenger. Did you get it? And check you personal messages in this forum. :P

Right on good review, and I agree the front sinks should be the small ones and thermaltake did a jackass job and made the fins longways when it should have them from short side to short side because they would be provided with active cooling on the front via the air coming out of the copper cooler. Kinda retarded, that is why I scrapped any idea's of using them, I do have a very nice full set of polished aluminum ram sinks off my rig if anyone wants them or you can get the ones from my copper cooler, sell each set for $4 + shipping.

how exactly do u fit the ramsink onto the ram when there is that resistor taller than the ram????
the pair of rams above the GPU

The thermaltake ones have cutouts that raise the heat sink up of the board away from the resistor, Will post photo's up tommorow of the sinks I have available.

which 1 raises up?
the blue or the gold ones?
accurateimage
09-27-2002, 09:18 PM
The gold ones, I do not have anymore of the blue, I have polished silver which does not raise and I have the gold which does, the same ones that come in the thermaltake kit.

oh thats good then
and it does perform well right?
if so, ill buy a kit

Yeah the kit rocks, but the gold sinks leave somthing to be desired, but if you have no sinks they definitly would make a difference.

You can get a 4400 for a little more, would be worth the jump, I only went to a 4200 because I got it for like $120 somthing

:-D
This is the new abit suluro 4200
ABIT Siluro GF4 Ti4200 OTES 64MB DVI/TV-out
Outside Thermal Exhaust System(OTES)
Look how far the thing goes over the RAM though- can't put sinks on THAT.....

you mean from tweak monster?
btw
are those gold sinks from the Geforce 4 kit good for Standard RAM or just BGA or both??
Ti4400 will be more expensive
more than 80 bucks of a difference here in canada
plus, they are discontinueing it so it is hard to find in vancouver
that abit card looks sweet, they are a little crazy i think...
wasting 2 slots...
might as well use heatpipes...
also is it AGP8x? or 4x?
eviltechie
09-28-2002, 11:54 AM
btw i think its good if the heatsink on that goes over 2 rams
those 2 rams dont need any ramsink because the heatsink will cool them

AI, could you post a closeup pic of the gold coloured heatsink from the TT geforce 4 kit please
i really need to see if it has a hole deep enuf to fit that big chunk of resistor
you see that resistor above the GPU, between those 2 top rams?
i know it seems small compared to other resistors on the card but it is tall compared to the ram...
also i have a question
the Aopen's Ti4200 has 250MHz nVIDIA Geforce 4 TI4200 via 500MHz -4ns DDR ram
the core sure has a lot of headroom because its a 128mb model
but how about the ram?
whats the equation again, anyone?
if i were really to spend more cash on a Ti4400, that would probably get me a 3.3ns ram setup right? which means more room for overclocking?
i need some help in deciding now
thanx in advance for any opinions

It would not clear that, only bums up about 1mm.

09-29-2002, 02:33 AM
darn
so i need to cut a hole for it?
also how big is it?
hows the coverage for standard ram?
accurateimage
09-29-2002, 10:17 AM
The ramitself is 2 1/8 inches by 1/2 inches approx. and yeah looks like you would have to dremel it out.

since it is pretty good already, ill leave it as it is for half a year or something until some game really demand me to OC

Hello All! I am wondering how you get those dumb silver heatsinks off of the PNY card without damaging the ram. Also the ram sink on the back o the card hits the clips for my main system ram! Any soulutions? :wavey:
