I decided that i was gonna put some thermaltake ramsinks on.. i figured some thermal grease would help.. oh it helped.. ruin the card! i guess it got on something and now it just produces a screen so garbled and messed up its unusable.. theres $130+ down the tube.. now i'm stuck with a g2 mx.. dont make the same mistake i did.

what kind did you apply..?? regular white..? or artic silver..?? Also how did you apply the grease on the ram and stick the sinks to it..? did ya clamp them on with metal..? If you put ram sinks on the best easy way to do it is frag tape. Not sure how ya put the sinks on with just grease. If it was artic silver then ya probably put on to much and it connected some of the ram pins.

Oh yeah feel free to send me the card and I will check it out for ya. Or I will buy it broken as it for $20 shipped. Accept paypal..?? ;)

its best to use non conductive silicon grease to overlap those pins on the ram before applying thermal paste

Jason425
09-29-2002, 01:29 PM
it was silver grease.. i tried with the sticky stuff and without.. i must have put too much on.. what do you mean to check it out.. what would you do? you think you could fix it?

eviltechie

or maybe he wants to make a Geforce 4 chip keychain out of it...

does it void ur warranty by adding a ram sink??

Jason425
09-29-2002, 02:35 PM
lol.. that score on my signiture is kinda void now.. i'm not gonna post my 1600 score with this card on there 8)

eviltechie
09-29-2002, 03:08 PM
what??

im saying does it void the chaintech's warranty by just adding ramsink onto it?

you can lie to them and just say "it just went out like that after i put on the ramsink with the fragtape"

if the arctic silver isnt visible on there that is

Jason425

i wiped all the silver off thinking that it would make it work but it didnt.. in fact it made it worse.. :( but anyway i bought the card online a while ago and have gotten rid of most of the documentation so i either gotta fix it or sell it

eviltechie
09-29-2002, 06:09 PM
wow what a smart thing you did...
getting rid of documents...

oh well...
i guess all you can do now is to find someone who knows how to fix it which is very hard to find

accurateimage
09-29-2002, 07:42 PM
Ouch, I was hoping you did not use artic silver, but oh well :) yeah I would say it is definitly dead now, if you can find any trace of the paperwork I would make sure no trace is left of the silver 3 and send it back, or you could call them and say you lost the paperwork and they may take it back, visiontek did that once for me because they are really cool :) well were really cool :)

what makes the silver so bad? hm.. i think i'll try contacting chaintech.. worth a try i guess? well if u still wanna buy it you can 8)

eviltechie
09-29-2002, 08:07 PM
LOL!!

what makes silver so bad?

well if you happen to have a stick of silver
stick it in the electric socket while holding it with ur bare hands
see if you get fried or not

well that sums it up pretty much

yes, Silver can conduct Electricity, there for shorting circuits if contacted with the electronics

now you would wish you looked at this before you did what you did

so this wont happen again

LOL! i used the CPU stuff on the video card.. lol anyways here is a copy of the email i sent to chaintech tech dept

Hello, my name is Jason and i recently purchased a chaintech geforce 4 card. I already was using ramsinks but wanted to put thermal grease on as well thinking that it would improve cooling and performance. After putting antec silver thermal compound on the ram modules and thermaltake ramsinks on, the card would only produce an unusable screen of very distorted images. I am requesting an exchange for a similar card or something of the like because perhaps the damaged card could provide information that would help you in future development of cards, and to warn people that such behaviors are unwise. I appreciate all consideration on the matter.

one way that might fix it is to clean the spots with the silver compound with isopropyl alchohol, perhaps thats what AI was thinking of doing once he get ur card for 20 bucks?

eviltechie

regaurds?

its spelled regards

its same sh*t different pile
you still have to becareful not to bridge the pins

thats a harsh thing to say, but i do have to agree that, jason, u screwed urself up...

Naw not harsh, just real, guess we overstate things here in the USA *L*

Jason425
09-29-2002, 08:28 PM
ah crap i spellt regards wrong  anyway.. how would i go about putting the alcohol on?

eviltechie
09-29-2002, 08:33 PM
well its harsh because its the last thing he needs right now...

lets see jason, you can dump a bottle of alchohol on the card and let it soak then take a lighter to it...

or use a papertowel with a drip of isopropyl alchohol and wipe off the silver cr@P

Jason425
09-29-2002, 08:58 PM
that first one sounds good 8) though i'll try the other one.. once i finish my jello

yup

follow this guide

and dl the video, very much worth it!!

Jason425

i'd rather throw it really high in the air and see how many times i can shoot it with a paintball gun before it hits the ground

eviltechie
09-29-2002, 09:39 PM
have u watched the video yet???

Jason425
09-29-2002, 10:50 PM
yea i watched the video.. watching it burn with lemons and whatever else was in there doesnt quite do justice to it.. i'd rather tear it apart than burn it

eviltechie
09-30-2002, 12:49 AM
hehe
lemon, olives, old rams...

if you really dont want it, you might consider taking the chip out
and making a key chain out of it...

wait for all possibilities of fixing it to be gone first

Jason425
09-30-2002, 10:51 PM
im gonna put a post in for sale for the card if you're interested

Question: Is the Artic Silver compound conductive?

eviltechie
10-04-2002, 06:28 PM
it can be...

the thermal adhesive can be

heres a quote from their application instructions
Even though Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive is specifically engineered for high electrical resistance, you should keep it away from processor, memory, and motherboard traces, pins and leads. The cured adhesive is slightly capacitive and can cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.

eviltechie
10-04-2002, 06:29 PM
and here is just for the Arctic Silver 3

Negligible electrical conductivity.
Arctic Silver 3 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity. It is only electrically conductive in a thin layer under extreme compression.
(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 3 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The compound is slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridged two close-proximity electrical paths.)

I can't believe you're going to trash it, without making a serious attempt to save it.
Douche it well with goof-off, then soak, rinse and repeat several times with Isopropyl, then dry well (hair dryer, or low oven (150º or less for a few hours)) NOT THE MICROWAVE!! ;)

eviltechie
10-06-2002, 07:44 PM
bake the whole card???

What? i haven't trashed it yet.. explain further plz

10-08-2002, 01:29 AM
Well, there maybe enough AS left around the pins to be causing the problems
So flushing it out with a little "Goof-Off" (xylene base solvent) to rinse the AS away, then Isopropyl Alchol to rinse that off (swish it around in a shallow pan dump it out, repeat) Outside, no smoking Please!
then allow that to air dry ( till alchol smell is gone) and then bake the card a a vey low temp to remove any remining water that may have soaked in from the Alchol, you must keep it below 150ºf, even lower if it has plastic parts (you should remove all you can before using the goof off) a hair dryer on very low might work too.
when you sure it's clean and dry, give it a try.
This may or may not save the card, and there's always some risk of frying something else. but for $10-15 dollars and a few hours (mostly waiting for it to dry, and making sure no one turns on the broiler), it might save you replacing it.

So did you try it yet?

Jason425
10-10-2002, 02:34 PM
no i havent tried it yet.. seems like an interesting idea.. but i dont know where to get this goof off or something similar to it and what the difference is between that and isopropyl. why not just do that same procedure with the alcohol?

eviltechie

they can be found in alot of stores...
wal-mart, k-mart, hardware stores should have them...
