What processors do you think have had the longest use period? Could it be the studly pentium pro's with the high cache level? Or the 68k macs that people still use for quicken? What do you think is the newest generation of long life processors? Xeon?

long life...

i hope you realize that the acceleration of the CPU chip inventions increases as time goes on

it means the slope is fluctuating and basicaly its tangent lines is increasing as time goes on

therefore, CPUs from the old times have a long life because newer chips are not invented for a longer time period

not really though

it took 3 years for Intel to jump from 8 MHz Intel 8088 to 12 MHz Intel 286
and then 3 then 2 then 1 and 1 and so on to the next level

and basically the Intel Pentium Pro came out in Nov. '95 and market was taken over by 233 Mhz Pentium MMX in June '97

and by 300 MHz Pentium II in May '97 before the MMX

so its marketing life time gets less and less dramaticaly from there
