Alright, I get up this morning and cut my computer on. First thing I notice, my new SBLive isnt working. All drivers intalled, no conficts, no errors, etc. but no sound. I Check the IRQ startup table, and it dosn't show an IRQ for my SB... So I move the card to the next free slot. The table shows IRQs for it, but when I get sound, it's just repeating the first second of it. I go BACK to the old slot, and get the SAME results as I did the first time... Finally, I move the card to another PCI slot. Works perfect!

What the hell causes this!

repeating sounds is a good indicator it's an IRQ conflict.

I could see that being the problem...but why did it just do it all of the sudden... Why not when I installed it?

Well...I guess it's a good thing I have so many PCI slots on my MB :)

The sound card is usually installed in PCI slot "3" this is the norm.
If the sound card does not work properly, try PCI slot "5".
There should not be any problems in slot 3, I have never found any problems with any sound card installed in this slot.
I usually install the NIC in slot "5", usually have no problems with it installed there.
I am the type builder that when you do something for a long time, and no problems.
I just keep doing it that way.

yeah I put my cards in the same conifguration.

Sound in PCI 3, to allow enough room for video card HSF combos, and network card in PCI 5, because slot 6 is too close to the bottom to get the cable unplugged easily.

That's why I do it anyway. I'm not sure if there's a technical reason for doing so though.

well i dont actualy count

its just my instinct to put it in the third slot as always...

my current setup is this

slot AGP - Geforce2 MX200
slot PCI 1- empty
slot pCI 2- SMC NIC 10/100
slot PCI 3- Sound blaster Live! Platinum
slot PCI 4- empty
slot PCI 5- 2 extra USB ports from mobo

Hmmm I never heard of that. Is this a standard or just a rule of thumb? Anyone have a link to more info.

Tried a search on the web, but that got me nowhere real fast... how many links have PCI in it ... arghhh such clutter on the web.. Tried searching for a thread but nothing came up in the forum search...

It is sort of like if you have been a doin it for a long time and it works. Just keep on a doin it that way.
There is no such link to that.
Most builders use slot 3 for the sound card, it just has been that way from way back when.
