Well here goes--I purchased the 75GXP 45g size in January 2001, along with an ASUS A7M266 motherboard and a 1.3 T-Bird.
The first time I attempted to boot the system. I had hard drive corruption badly. I read of others telling thier storys, and immediately contacted IBM. This was supposedly caused by VIA's HD drivers in the 4n1's.
Thier tech person explained that I should download thier Disk Utilities and wipe the disk clean. Then start from new and build the drive over.
I lost everything on the drive, but I did what the tech person asked.
The drive works, but seems as though it is not as fast as it was before this happened.
I contacted thier tech support again about the drive. I was wanting the drive replaced due to the slowdown, I was asked if I had made sure the mode was 5 when I was wiping the drive. I checked and the drive was running in mode 4. He explained that mode 4 was udma 66 and I needed to change this to mode 5.
I did this and the drive still seems the same. I contacted the Tech support about replacing the drive mainly because I did not feel the drive was good as it should be. I was told I could send it in, but if the drive was operational. I would get the drive back in a few weeks the same as I sent it to them.
I have been using the drive since. I don't know if the drive will ever perform as it should.
I tried a Western Digital in my system at one time and it shows 24003 in Si Soft Sandra 2002 Pro. This drive shows in the 22000-22900 range. Never over this.
I am stuck with it because IBM will not replace it as long at system will boot from it. No matter about the speed of the drivel.
The corruption was supposedly caused by the VIA HD drivers.
I have had to wipe the drive 3 times since the first original one for a total of 4.
I have since switched to Western Digaital and none of these drives ever has had a problem with any chipset.
I am still using this drive, because I won't place the drive in a new unit to be sold. People would know I have placed a used HD in thier systeme, and probably would know of the problems in the past with this drive.
