A variation of Duct Tape called 100mph tape was used in WWII and maybe even in the Korean war to patch bullet holes in aircraft.

Duct tape is like the force
has one lighter and one darker side
and keeps the universe together.

Have taped broken windows on car.
and not bullet holes but rust holes.

In a bad off-road situation I've heard of people using lots (and I mean Lots) of duct tape to patch broken tie-rod ends. Not safe nor is it petty but when it's a ten-mile walk it's amazing what you'll try.
