I'm still on dial-up and the intergrated sound card i'm running now will be the last one I'll ever run if I have my say in it.

Just a bit of info, I read a review today of the Hercules Radeon 9700 Pro and the person doing the review did a thing I have never heard of before. A sound card decreases the performance of the computer by at least 20% in some of these hi-end games. Can you just imagine if you were in NOLFv2 and was kicking 103fps. If you could eleminate the sound card, you would be hitting about 130fps without changing anything else.

http://www.eagleperformancepcs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=241

Reading this and seeing the benchmarks, almost want's one to throw away the sound card in your system. Maybe this is basically why the onboard sound is beginning to be more popular. Looks as if onboard sound does not take as big a hit as the PCI card.

If you are in a rural area where the phone lines are not a great hookup. I feel for you. Awhile back we found ourselves in a financial bind. We had to discontinue our satellite ISP for a couple months until we were able to afford the $60 a month. The wife was hit in the rear by another woman driver talking on her cell phone. Hit the wife's car in the drivers side rear at about 35mph. The wife was stopped dead still. It totalled her car, then the ladies insurance decided they were not going to pay anything on our vehicle or medical bills. Long story, anyway I had to engage an attorney to aid us in attempting to settle this. Her ins co still has not paid any of the medical bills. We had to pay them by using our PIP, now we have none left on our policy for medical. So now just a waiting game. I signed up on NetZero for a couple of months. I just could not stand taking all night to download a 10mb file. Most of the time just to find the system has disconnected before the file had completed the download. Anyway as I said I feel for you, dial up really sucks after you have been used to broadband.

i think when sound card is hooked up and working, it uses very little memory and CPU which could slow down the system but a tiny bit

maybe thats why...

but please correct me if im wrong

That won't make on-board sound more popular, according to him it had just as much impact on the system. And in my particular experience I've got more out of a system by disabling on-board and adding a card (it was on an old packard bell but it helped). That's the only time I've seen results like that but have had diffrent myself. And with my current on-board sound sucking the way it does I couldn't bear to live with it. It distorts many MP3's some so severly you can barely hear words, it get's really bad in music video's. And in some games it will break up severly, lag the game, and cut out wholly at times. Computer run good and graphics will be fine but the audio is horrible. Work-around is to scrap the on-board audio. Also be aware that some games will not work without audio. Septerra Core (an older RPG) tries to initilaze your sound card when loading and it if doesn't it will crash every time. Also sorry to hear about ya'll gettin' stiffed onteh car wreck. That sucks man. 3rd and final note and least I get a good dial up 5k a second standard which beats the hell outta some I've had in the past

Wont boot up eh? Could have told ya that. The Asus board is very picky on what RIMMS you populate it with. OCZ memory will not work with it at all unless you set it to PC-800 in the BIOS and that's only if your lucky. The same goes for the recommended Samsung memory.

The Asus recommended Kingston memory also wont work. After speaking with Kingston, they told me they discontinued all the RIMMS and sent new specifications to their mgf. to support the Asus motherboards. They informed me the new RIMMS wont be available until after Nov. 11th and that only 8000 units will be distributed to prefered resellers only(listed on Kingstons website). I also called all the prefered resellers and they all confirmed they had massive back orders for the (new) KVR1066xxxx/xxx RIMM modules.

I however was very lucky. I was able to contact a reseller in CA that had 4 RIMMS left that are verified to work on the Giga-Byte GA-8IHXP2 motherboard. I'm not going to hold my breath that it will work correctly but I do have more confidence in the Giga-Byte boards than I do with Asus because of the extensive list of verified RIMMS provided by them.
