Hi,

just upgraded my puter, with the Abit NF7 - S, and AMD 2400+, only I think it's running a bit hot, at 58 degrees ...

The only reason I ask is that when I was installing the heatsink (stock AMD one) the tape covering the thermal stuff jus kinda "fell" off, so, having never done this before I was wondering if this was normal?

cheers, Rob

there is a film that you have to remove before putting the heatsink fan on

i would suggest you go buy a little 3gram tube of arctic silver 3
follow the guide on www.arcticsilver.com and you should have better results

i would say if done properly, you should get 50 C with no problems

also use thermal tape or thermal paste

and remember to remove the protective film
that is very important

Hey,

Yes, I was planning on removing the tape covering the thermal stuff, it just seemed to come off too easy for my liking...

However, as I had just built the computer I had it lying on it's side, I've now put it upright, and the CPU seems cooler...

will see if it runs cooler in the long run. If not i'll get some thermal paste.

just a note, will running it at 60 degrees damage the CPU?

thanks, Rob

it could last up to 70C without damaging it
but i would try and keep it under 50C for prolonged life and since it is a tbred, it should be cooler at around 45C with stock

you have to remove the film, otherwise it will damage your CPU

if it doesnt get cooler you might look for a new hsf.. i heard the stock amd sinks are really cheap and dont perform well.. thats just what i heard, no experience there.

cheers, I think i might look for a new HSF ...

On another note, When I was buying the motherboard & memory, the guy in the shop told me the memory I was getting " 256Mb PC2700 (PC333) DDR Memory (Major) " would not work with the motherboard (ABIT NF7 - S), and told me the only kind that would work was the Corsair memory, this being to do with the nforce 2 chip...

I was reluctant to believe him, so got the standard memory instead, which is installed and working ...

Does anyone know if theres a problem using the standard memory, or was the guy in the shop just trying to get me to buy the expensive memory ?

:/

there are occasionaly memory incompatibilities

but usualy it has to do with the samsung memory modules
there are often new bioses that will fix these problems

but i think that guy is just ripping you off

AVC Sunflower is a good heatsink because of its noise/performance ratio is supreme

Yeah, I thought it didn't seem likely that only the corsair would work, cos i've never read it newhere else ...

Gunna go get some Thermal grease Tomorrow ... my plan is to just go for the most spencivest stuff they have, even if it will only be for like a 10 gram tube...

get nanotherm EXP if you can

if not
go for Arctic Silver 3

look for whitecap
red caps are fake and can damage ur CPU as it can be watery and very conductive

Yeah, just reading about the arctic silver on their website ... dodgy stuff..

The shop i'm planning on going to doesn't stock either of those, but does have "Antec Silver Thermal Compound" so i think i'll go for that.

just gotta hope i don't balls up putting it on

here are the specs i grabed from antec's website for that antec silver thermala compound

Made with 99% pure micronized silver
75% to 80% silver content by weight
Extended temperature limits: -60 C to 170 C
Thermal Conductivity: 8.2 W/m K
Thermal Resistance: 0.0022 C/W

99% micronized silver
i guess its alright

just becareful withit

Yeah, kinda similar to the Arctic Silver Specs (I think).

Anyway, heres for hoping this works, if not it's back to the shop to try to convince them it's the CPU thats miffed, and not anything I did with it

and dont put the silver stuff on your video card .. i thought they would improve my ramsinks.. it toasted my ti4200 :( lesson learned..

thats cause you bridged the pins that connect to the ram module
shorted it and fried it

well...

went to the shop put they didn't have the silver compund so I got some of the "thermal pads". These didn't do much good as the temp now idles at 60 +.

I think i've found out why the CPU runs hot, because my friend bought the same CPU, with the HSF, and his HSink is a completely different, aluminium construction (Which runs at average 40 degrees).

Has anyone out there got the amd 2400 with the stock (retail) HSF and can tell me if I have the correct HSF for the CPU?

Hmm, been looking on the Abit website, apparently theres a Bios update available, and it fixes a problem with Bios reporting incorrect temps ...

Will have a go n see if this helps

Hi,

Just to let anyone know ... I fixed the problem of over heating - a big ass heatsink does the job, now nice and happy at 35 o c :)

which heatsink?

02-08-2003, 01:06 AM
Coolermaster HAC-V81 Extreme Heat Sink Fan Delta with PCI Fan Control 2800+

Cheep, but kinda noisy (too noisy for my liking, but u can slow the fan down), not sure If I want to do that much though, will have to fiddle with noise vs temp later ...

eviltechie

yeah delta is pretty loud

i might look into SLK-800 w/ TMD fan if i really need the best air cooling solution... in terms of noise/performance

Blimey, that things half a kilo!

I'd be worrying about it falling off ...

it would never fall of unless installed improperly or fell off from the 20th floor which would probably render the whole PC in-operable as parts break and spatter like a cake
