It look s as if this one is built on the same platform as the 9500 Pro, instead of the 9700, like the previous one was. The memory is laid out in a straight line instead of an L-shape If that is the case, the software mod will not work.

some market control ATI's got
seems like they still want to concentrate on the 9700 even though 9500 mod might turn out more net profit for them in the end...
also they might have changed it because of warranty because it is really really hard to tell if a graphics card was OC'ed or not
unless u volted the damn thing and heat f*xored it up

Absolutely correct:
ATI has recalled ALL the 9500's that could be modded to a 9700 and replaced them with a new card w/different pcb that cannot be modded.
As much publicity as this was given, people that had the priviledge of obtaineing one of these and did the mod, are very lucky.
I did get a 9500 Pro and flashed the bios as to OC the card.
This gave me a couple thousand more points from 3dMark2001se.
I can't say the games play any better after the mod than they did before the mod.
I guess this sort of stuff is just # chasing.
Bragging rights, and the feeling of ackomplishing something is another facet.
