View Full Version : Filesharing WIN2K -> WIN98

I have enabled sharing on my win2k folder, and have enabled file sharing on my windows 98 computer. When I try to access the shared folder on my 98 machine, I get a password box. How do I make this sharing work?

Right click the shared folder on the 98 box and select properties. Check your permissions. If this is an internal network (not accessible from the outside) allow everyone access.
Otherwise you'll need to create a user on the 98 box same as your 2000 box, then you should be able to login.

The permissions are correct. When I go into NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD on my 98 box and click on my 2000 box i get a enter password screen.

If you are trying to access a shared folder on the 2k box from the 98 box, create a user on the 2000k box the same as your 98 box and allow them access and you wont have to type a password. Or reset the quest password and when prompted for the password type that in.
With 2K you have to login to the machine, no way around that that I'm aware of. I just create users on the 2k box for all my LAN boxes and give them full rights. No one has to login that way.
Make sense? Don't think I'm awake yet.

If the drive is NTFS I didn't thing win 98 could see it all. Am I incorrect in this?

The format of the 2k box drive doesn't matter. Mine is NTFS and have never had any trouble.
The issue here is permissions and who has the right to view it. Any box that I connect to my network under my workgroup can see my shares. But to access them they need to login to the 2k box. I've set up a guest account for this and just type in the guests password and I'm in like flin :nod:
