When I put ANY CD into the CD drive on my
laptop, I get a message that says:
"Windows cannot read from this disk.
This disk might be corrupt, or it is using
a format that is not compatible with Windows"
I put the same CD's into my desktop pc, and
they work just fine...
Both have XP...
Can anybody help?
Or tell me whats wrong?

I don't think it's too old, it's a Gateway solo 1200...
I really have no idea how old it is, but doubt it's really old...
I can hit eject in the computer (i.e. right click the cd icon) and the tray ejects, so I don't think the cable is loose...
And if it did come loose, I have no way of knowing, I
can't figure out how to flip the keyboard up (and don't
think that it can flip up) to see if anything has come loose.
And the manual doesn't say anything about it...
I don't want to unscrew the bottom or anything because I'm
afraid something will fall out and I will have no idea
where to put it...
The cd's don't have scratches either...
Thanks though...

I figured out how to get the
keyboard to pop off, turns out
it actually does pop off.
Anyway, it's not a connection problem
100% sure of that now.
Is it possible that theres a problem
within Windows that is causing this?

Ok, lets say I reformat, and it's
not a problem within Windows..
How would I get Windows back on the computer
if the drive wont read disks?

My CD-rom makes me restart in order to recognize a new cd.. and sometimes (like now) it disappears from everywhere and i have to restart.. I hate asus..

Hmm...Well I bought an external cd
burner, because I needed one anyway,
and I use that to recognize the cd's and it
works fine. So I am going to reformat
and install Windows98 and take this XP crap
off of it, and see if that fixes the problem.
I'll keep it posted.

contact gateway tech support
also go into device manager and see if the cdrom drive driver is installed properly and if it is in the right mode

I have called Gateway and they told
me I would have to pay them $600.00
to replace the drive, and that I shouldn't do it
myself. I have heard from numerous people
that it is a *simple* task, even had someone send me
pictures of how to do it.
But there seems to be no
problem with the drive, only something (in Windows I'm guessing)
telling it that the CD's are not in the right format.
The correct driver is installed,
what do you mean "check to see if it's in the right mode"?
The external cd drive wont work because it's
USB (I'm guessing thats why).
I try to boot 98 from disk drive, after disabling and
deleting the driver for the internal cd drive,
and it still tries to use that same drive to boot
from the disk.
