Anyone ever heard of this??::
puter working along ok (Dell-Win98SE) on monday (yesterday). Turned it on today-when win tried to boot, got this popup: 'E47250; INCORRECT MPEG FORMAT.' Then, nuttin! Worked on the silly thing for a few hours, couldn't get into safe mode, tried everything, etc. SOO-went for the big hammer--complete re-install.

It started up, doing nicely-untill Win tried to load and guess what? Got the same popup again! How could it do this again after the total recall?? HELP!

Thanks, Jason, for your reply. Have 4 puters, and IMHO, the Dell is a large piece of quanosine triphosphate. Think I will just junk it! :/
Wierd thingee remains about the error message. M$ has never heard of it, neither a few of my hacker buddies. (names withheld by request 8)
Who knows? Thanks again, The Foz! aka, 'aspenlad'.

just format everything
all of the harddrives on that machine

what do you mean by "reinstall"

Sorry, Evil-poor choice of words. :/ I did the whole reformat thing, per Win. Ie, 'this will format your hard drive & return it to it's original factory setup, are you sure you want to do this, etc.' Then the cd loads or 're-installs' W98.
That's what's blowing what few brain cells I have left away! If it's the 'original factory' setup==why is the ^)%()^&$* thing still in there???

Thanks for your input, The Foz!

Sounds as if you may have a virus or worm.
Sometimes they can get imbedded in the hard drive which would require a low level format to remove.
After the lowlevel format, you would need to fdisk and regular format of the drive.
That should remove anything that is on the drive.

Many manufacturers have a program included on their systems that 'format' the hard drives, but don't really format them. They just remove all settings, documents, and programs and leave the system files in tact. It seems that this be the case as you said it mentioned something about returning it to the original factory settings. A real format, such as one performed using DOS, would have a message more like

The type of the file system is NTFS.

WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK
DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format (Y/N)?

Would it be safe to assume then that whatever you are using to format isn't truly formatting your hard drive?

Hello -- this is the GPIX trojan. McAfee can fix it . Google on the error E47250 message- you'll see some info about it.

It's me again -

There's a special problem here for ME and XP users: from the McAfee page:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm

" Windows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files automatically to the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected file could be stored there as a backup file, and VirusScan will be unable to delete these files. You must disable the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files from the C:\_Restore folder."

This may be why the bug reappears after cleanup

I have been doing some research on this one, it seems to be an adaware trojan, caused from surfing adult content.
