I'd try using the NT drivers. That's what I was using for my sound card drivers because I didn't feel like going and downloading the XP ones. It may or may not work but it's worth a try. XP won't take DOS based OS drivers. If you know what sound card it uses you can get the drivers for it elsewhere.

You could contact HP tech support.
It would cost some money to do so, matter of fact as much as a medium priced sound card would cost.
Have you removed the case panel and took a look at the sound card?
If necessary remove it from the PCI slot if it is a PCI card.
And write down the make and model of the sound card.
If it is onboard sound, you surely can see the controller, south bridge is usually the sound controller for onboard sound in the latter version of the mobo's.
Do you have the manual for this computer? If so what does it say about sound?
If you do not have the manual, you surely could download the manual from HP's website, then you can read about the sound card with that mobo.

ive worked with a few kayaks before

new and old ones

ive ghosted them many times and none of them seemed to be needing a sound driver install as both win2k pro and winxp pro automatically installs them correctly
the only problem i have is for one of the kayak which the matrox millenium graphics card's driver gets funny and displays strange refresh rates...

anyways...

contact HP
kayaks are so expensive, so im sure they will be willing to support it as kayaks comes with good support
