Well, if you downloaded and installed a pirated copy of Photoshop 6 or 7, get ready for a visit from the FBI. This article is self explanatory.
-------
Homing Device Found In Photoshop 6 and 7
It was announced today by Adobe, Inc. that the upgrade to Photoshop 6.1 and Photoshop 7 added a special devices that 'phones home' the registration number and collected computer data to create a unique # (similar to what is found in Windows XP).

Obviously, this was a move to collect a list of its pirated software. Adobe has been compiling the list since the release of their free 6.1 upgrade last July. CNN reports that the list has been sent to the FBI, more here:

Adobe Systems, Inc, makers of the popular computer graphics program Photoshop, announced on Friday that they have compiled and submitted a list of more than 25,000 Internet Protocol (IP) addresses with duplicate serial numbers for versions six and seven of their product. A spokesman from Adobe says "We installed what is called a 'callback' on Photoshop to try and curb piracy. It essentially sends installation information to our servers upon first use." The FBI plans to work with national and local Internet Service Providers (ISP) to find and convict those responsible.
-----------------------------------------------------

I know Flash MX and others are rumored to have these devices too. Pirates beware, it looks like the companies are coming after you.
Although it doesn't state it above, the adobe device only calls in once, during an idle period.

Hrm, good thing I uninstalled Photoshop 7 after it would not stop locking up. SPAMI was able to open it up a few times so it probally "phoned home." SPAMI guess I will have to setup a firewall to block that data next time it install it. SPAMDoes anyone know of a fix for this?

That is why you get Zone Alarm (http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/znalm26gen/zonalm2601.exe) - the software (Photoshop, in this case) can't access the internet or provide information without your permission. See, we hackers got tools, too. SPAM;D

Plus, I am sure this could easily just be a scare tactic.

Guys,
Why don't you switch over to tiny and give it a try. I switched a couple yrs ago and glad I did. ZA uses about 5-6 percent of your resources, while Tiny only uses less than 1 percent. ZA use to cause a lot of crashes on my machine then.
You must register to get a number, but it is free for home computers and updates are regular.

Does NeoWatch provide as many options and covers as much security as ZA and Tiny? Also, how much percent of you comps resources does it use ???

Tiny isn't as effective as ZA so I will stick with it and it hasn't crashed my computer. Tiny is excellent though. That is undisputed. I have one of the original version of Neowatch...havn't ever used it though.

Yes, it appears that some of the article was false, 'the call back feature', but the 'spider function' is true. Which means best not to ever run or try to register a warez copy of adobe software from the system you use to surf the internet, if you do then your ISP address and proxy setting will be logged, also the spider is not able to interrogate a system that is not allowing an active internet connection by adobe software, no auto updates, no Adobe Online. The Spider is crawling looking out for keywords and serial number sequences that relate to adobe software, the prime targets are warez sites, not personal pcs. Don't use adobe software when you are on line, without a good firewall.

fake or not, i think sometime over the next 5 years or so we will have to stop criminal action related to computer stuff. i think the producers uv good software are sad about piracy, cuz i think more peeps use the stuff without paying for it then the ones who pay. sometime they will have their revenge.

MIK3
06-17-2002, 03:19 AM
nah i dont think that in the next 5 years this all is going to stop unless critical measures are taken! SPAMI think that there are way to many computer geniuses out there and i think that they easily out number legal officials 80 to 1... it will be a long time for this to happen and if it really did become reality...the computer world and buisness companies will have so much better profit due to the lack of hackers...one day...one day...
