I know I'm REALLY late on this, and you may have figured it out by now, but have you tried connecting your harddrive to a standard IDE controller instead of RAID? For what you are wanting to do, it wouldn't be a big deal to connect the drive to your standard IDE controller, boot to DOS from a Win98 CD, and run the Maxtor utility. I could be wrong about this, but I have two 74Gb SATA WD Raptors in a RAID0 array, and in the Windows device manager, they don't show up as WD drives. Under the Disk Drives section, they simply show up as "Promise 2+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device". :/
