Hi,

Does anybody now what this means: when I try to start my computer it doesn't start and beeps 3 times. GA-7VTXE+ motherboard and XP 1800+
CPU.
I couldn't find any info on gigabyte's website on what 3 beeps mean.
Can anybody give me a direction on what's wrong?

Thank you

Vadim

i think 3 beeps = a memory problem.. make sure they're in - that the ram isn't bad.. and that some bios setting isn't off

Thank you for the reply.

This machine has been working for 2 years and I didn't have any problems and I didn't touch the hardware, so I don't think it's memory. Until a week ago first it would start only after several tries, now I can not start it at all. It doesn't come even to the point where I can run bios setup so it's probably not memory.

It probably is the memory. Three beeps most commonly means either the video card or the memory is functioning erroneously. You don't have to touch the hardware for something to go wrong with it, it doesn't last forever. If you can't even get to the BIOS, I am sure the problem isn't with a BIOS setting, and seeing how software evidently doesn't load yet, the problem must be hardware. The only components required for it to show the video information screen are the power supply, motherboard, processor, RAM, and video card (unless you have onboard video). It's almost certainly one of those components.

he could try unplugging the unneccessary components (everything other than what vee_ess said and see what happens

Hi

If the problem is memory I suppose it should have failed at the time when memory check is done and I think I should have been able at least to run bios setup.
Am I right?

Thank you

I don't like your attitude... i'm not helping you anymore :shake:

You need memory to start your system up at all; the memory check is there to check the allocation.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions, I will try to replace video card on my machine and I'll try to replace memory and I'll see what happens.
I'll post the results to the newsgroup.

I didn't understand the note about my attitude, English is not my first language so maybe I wrote something which is not appropriate, but I am not sure what. Sorry about that.

Hi,

It turned out my LAN connection was the problem, maybe it was creating a short circuit (strange).
I unplugged it, plugged in again and it all started working: no beeping, as good as new.
Actually the only thing I touched in hardware before I started having these problems is I unplugged and plugged in the LAN cable.

Thank you

Vadim
