Thanks for the warm welcomes! I frequent quite a few tech sites and distributed computing sites and came across this one in my searches... looks pretty cool.
Do y'all discuss distributed computing topics or just mainly hardware/software tech type stuff?

I don't recall any distributed computing threads but we'll sure as hell welcome any you want to start. SPAMWe duscuss a little of everything and a whole lot of nothing and all at the same time. SPAM

Right on.. SPAMkind of the standard at most of the sites I frequent SPAM;)
Not sure if anyone here does DC, but if anyones interested I would be glad to shed a little light on the matter... My main forum is ExtremeDC, a distributed computing team site (with lots of other stuff too).
I been browsiong what y'all have here, looks quite interesting, some decent posts and all... keep up the good work!

Actually I've been daydreaming about it. SPAMWhere is your standard bottlenecks? SPAMDoes 10/100 ethernet prove to hold you back at a certain standard processor speed. SPAMLike would a bunch of 1 Gig processors have an advantage over the same number of 500 MHz processors if the network can only get the information out so fast. SPAMWhat kind of cluster really needs 1 Gig ethernet. SPAMSeen any fiber clusters? SPAMI'm very curious but even more poor. SPAMJust want to know some more.

Well the projects I am running do not rely on my net speed. In fact, i have boxes that are not connected that crunch away. SPAMI mainly do Eccp, which doesn't require a consistent net connection (which I have) and definately matters what type of proc. you are using.
I have about 12 systems crunching at home ranging from a lowly 80Mhz RISC mac system to a OC'd XP1800+ so I get a decent output in the stats but in this project every little bit matters so your speed is relative to what you can actually do.
Eccp basically crunches the numbers, then you send your results either manually or automatically to the proxy server. I uses unused clock cycles and basically just runs in the background without any user input (other than transmitting data points if you do it manually), so the network connection isn't all that important of a factor in the results.

Come by extremedc.com sometime, ask questions there, the guys will be more than happy to help.. chances are, they'll show up here as well, since they are all very "tech" oriented.

Welcome aboard and look forward to future posts from you and yours.

Not really sure what numbers we're talking about crunching here, but I guess I learn when I check out your site eh? SPAM;D

Is nice to see a new face now and then. Have a good'n and I'm sure I'll be a seein you around.

Here's what Eccp is in a nutshell:

For those new to distributed computing, this would be an excellent project to get started on. It does not need an Internet connection like all the other projects - it does not download any work from the net, the client creates a starting point from your system information, finding points along an elliptic curve. Certain points are considered to be "distingusted", these are the "money makers"! The project is about 1/2 way complete without anyone finding the two winning points yet. The project is sponsored by CERTICOM and run by Notre Dame University in Indiana there will be two $1000 cash prizes to the two people that find the winning points, not the most points!

You install a very small client on your system that uses unused clock cycles (when you do more it uses less) on your system and it in turns submits the "distingusted" data poiints to the server either manually or automatically, depending on which method you choose.

It's a fun project, we are #6 in the world right now and building steam. SPAMWe welcome any and all of you if your interested.

So far this has been a really informative website.. I have found that there are things I can get and give from it... well done!

Ok, guys n gals,

Joined the ExtremeDC team for the eccp number crunchin dealy bobber.

Runs in the background and doesn't really seem to cause any harm trouble what ever you want to call it.

I think we should all help em reach the top. They're in 6th place right now. All it takes is installing the client and joining the team. Nothing else to it.

You don't have to sign your life away, or subscribe to any lists or give up an arm n a leg, unless you're into that of course. So hey Netsmog let's support these guys in there venture and rack up some numbers? What do you say?

Download the client

Once you have submited at least one unit then you can join a team.
