I wanna set up a file server
What is a good FTP/http program for setting this up
what are the pros and cons of each
My network setup:
home network not wireless
hardware router
cable modem
I want to be able to:
Password protect it
allow remote uploads (friends uploading to pick something else up some where else)
devote my bandwidth to it at certain times (set idle for 10 mins = max bandwidth)

Ipswitch also has WS FTP Server which is what you would be looking for from them. Here's the link (http://download.com.com/3000-2165-10203627.html?tag=lst-0-6). While there, you might want to look at this search (http://download.com.com/3120-2001-0-1-0.html?qt=ftp+server&author=&titlename=&desc=&dlcount=&daysback=&swlink=&os=&li=49&dlsize=&ca=) to find other free ftp server solutions. Tucow's directory (http://www.tucows.com/ftpserver95_default.html) has a lot of good options, too.

Actually, I think you are looking for a few different things..
Google for phpDev. It comes with php, mySQL, apache, cerberus FTP server, ... lots of stuff.
Then you might want to check out peacefire.org to get the files to setup the circumventor. Sorry to say though, setting up one from behind a network is near impossible.
If you decide to go this route, it will take a little bit of setup. As in your ISP will block the default ftp and http ports, servername setup, and so on. If you have any questions, please contact me on AIM. TheShadows42

I think I know what you are looking for, but it would require a dedicated computer. Go to http://www.e-smith.org and click on "download developer release" at the top. This is a Redhat linux based operating system that has so many great features. I have an old computer running it right now. It has a web server, ftp server, file server, and print server, and has a gateway function as well.
It's very easy to install and run, and even has browser-based configuration. All you do is go to http://the-name-of-your-server/server-manager. You can enable or disable remote configuration (to enable configuration over the internet), you can enable or disable public FTP access, create usernames and passwords, etc. This is great software!
