We all know dust is bad for out computers. SPAMIt builds up on everything. SPAMIt cuts down on the heat transfer to the circulating air and when you get dustbunnies in you slots that can't be good. SPAMSo I did something about it this week. SPAMI had bored out all the holes in the front of my case so my fan could breath better and draw more air a while back. SPAMThis time I took the dremel and cut off half of the front plastic part of the case. SPAMI added a couple of magnets to hold back in place and some screws I could turn in or out to make it set right. SPAMThen I got a foam element out of a wet dry vac (just cause it had a real fine foam in it). SPAMCut it up into two pieces and put them in the now removable half of the front of my case. SPAMAdded some oil from a wet based car air filter (the oil is sticky and helps grab more of the dust as it passes by). Slapped it together and look allright but more importantly if work real well. SPAMMy intake fan sucks all of it's air through the filters and keeps a lot of the crap out of my case. SPAMAnd the foam also cuts down on the noise of the front fan. SPAMIt's almost half as noisy as it was. SPAMDone it for about $10 American which I think makes the mod even better.

i bought a can of high pressure air spray and cleaned my HSF. since the alphas ( i own a pal6035 ) have very tight fins they get hella dusty. -> three times PFFFFFFFFFFT and my CPU runs about 10°C cooler now ;D no joke, there was a fistful of dust in it :o

increasing the longevity of you cpu for about 5 -10 dollars is definately worth it. i wanna get a summer job so i can afford to seal my comp and use water cooling. that reminds me, i gotta clean my system as it is really dirty lately. my processor temps have gone to about 110 degrees where they used to be at about 90 degrees so i can easily belive you -=aoC|PRoZaK=-

ya dust is our enemy, but how do ya wanna seal ya rig? do you want to use an external radiator? i have a funny idea for you: there are cooling boxes that work with peltier elements. such a box can do about 40 watts of cooling. use such a box as water reservoir and if ya want, add a radiaror or not. this may help ya keep the temps down and if ya don't use a radiator, the only fan (if there even is one) is in the cooling box. ;D

Not bad, I have seen people use filters, but you have bumped it to a new level. SPAMI do have different feelings on it as well, I guess the first thing is your opening yourself to one more thing you have to manage, whether your filter gets to the point where it prevents enough air to enter your case, now you shouldnt be worried about dust you should be worrying about your case overheating. SPAMI have been building PC's since Mac SE was the shiznit. And I have found that by just creating an air circulation system with about $12 in fans, you can prevent dust and add to your systems cooling arrangement. Also follow some general fixes, keep it off the ground, make use of the fan direction arrows, dont compromise heat and cleanliness. SPAMAnd hit your desk up with some anti-static spray around the base of your case.
My case fan is clicking and I think it is dust.
Could too much dust in the case fan cause it to make a clicking sound?

It could but if it did it sound like it's in the bearing? and the bearing is going bad. SPAMAt least that's what I'ld think if it was a car or piece of machinery.

Dust might cause a clicking, but i'm with Savage, sounds like a bearing from here.
I bought the computer about one year ago. How could it be going bad already?
Also I think it is dust because everytime I clean the case fan the clicking sound goes away. I have to clean it once every month though. If it is dust, is there anything I can do so I don't need to clean it so often?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. SPAMI'm in the process of moving. SPAMIt could be going bad. SPAMDepends on the quality of the fan, hours of use, and if it was just a sucky built fan to begin with or not. SPAMAlso cleaning the dust could inadvertanly fix it by moving the bearing just enought that it's seated on a good area internally. SPAMThen as time goes on and the fan runs it slips back to a bad area and starts clicking. SPAMMy above mod is the way I deal with all dust in my computer. SPAMThe fan sets behind the filter so even the fan is protected.
Thanks for the advice Savage. I am going to buy a new fan because if mine goes out then I am in BIG trouble.
How much does a fan cost??

Should be around 10 bucks. SPAMI've seen them at Radio Shack before, depending on what size ya need. SPAMGood Luck Man.

Savage...how strong are the magnets you are using. I have heard that it is not real good to get magnets anywhere your hard drive...can play real havoc with it.
I want to add some filters on the front of my Antec case as well. Only problem is that it is a real pain to take both side panels off just so I can get to the clips that hold the front face plate on. I have to remove it so I can put in a filter. Have been thinking quite seriously about it. I think one of my fans may be going bad anyway as I hear a dull rrrrrrrrrrr lower than my other fans and starting up shortly after everything else when I turn my system on. Any suggestions for a good quiet, but efficient case fan...need at least four of them. Thanks.

Magnets are bad for you hard drive, because they pull the magnetic peices off of the platter. Most of today's hard drives are resistant (not completely magnet proof) to magnets, and, from personal experience, I can say they are.

I havn't seen any problems with the Magnets hurting the drive. It's about 4 inches away so I figure the huge CRT about 1 foot away would have much more of an effect on the drive. As far as particular fans I just use whatever I can get my hands on. As long as it moves air it can't all be bad.

Well, I don't believe that CRT's generate magnetism, they're just affected by it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've heard.

They are affected but because they also use and generate magnetism. On the top, bottom, and both sides of the tube you will find a large coil of wire. This is magnetized to bend the streams of electrons from the rear of the tube to diffrent point on the front. Your screen is painted one pixel at a time because you only have one tube and one electron stream generated by your 3 electron guns (green, red, and blue). The coils bend the stream back and forth and up and down the screen extremly fast to refresh the screen. When you get magnets too close to the tube it interfers with the coils and doesn't allow them to bend the stream properly. Maybe a little to much info but I hope it helps.

i wish they made pc cases like the mac ones that open on the side with the handle; and the mother board comes out on the wall

I'ld check with some of the sound shops for cars. They have sound absorbing material for cars. It would work real well in a case.
home depot has insulatoin for you attic that might work, but frozen cpu (http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/scan/se=Noise%20Dampening/mp=menu_search_top.html?id=H8UIfHjQ) has stuff thats actually meant for the computer :rofl:

dynamat is sound deadning insulation they use in cars. you should be able to get it at http://www.jcwhitney.com they have just about everything for cars there (not always the highest quality though).

My case has 9 fans total, sounds like a hoover vacume cleaner and sucks as much dirt. It's cool, nothing an air compressor cannot fix hehe :)

Well, I don't believe that CRT's generate magnetism, they're just affected by it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've heard.
:nod: Actually they do generate magnetism, it is how the (Crt) monitor works. If there's electrons moving through it, it generates magnetism.
:biggrin: in the case of the CRT, the effects is negligible since distance from any HD you have inside your Case is far enough to have its destructive effects.
