This is my problem. I have Qwest DSL in Colorado Springs, CO. I just moved my old computer to the basement for my daughter to use, and my new computer is on the second floor. I was wanting to buy another DSL modem to hook up in the basement so she would have access to the net. After talking with Qwest/MSN I was told that I could not have 2 modems on the same line? Is this true? I was also told that I would need to run CAT5 cable to my computer in the basement (this is not an option since I own a 2 story home w/basement). My other option was to run a wireless network. I already have one for my laptop and it does not get a signal in the basement. Another modem would be the best option for me. Can I make this work?? Please help! Thank You.

I doubt you could get another modem w/o paying double fee.. even then i don't see how it would work.. Maybe play with where the wireless station is placed or get a signal booster and put it half way between. Or you could get a real long cable and run it downstairs or worse case scenerio you drill through the floor (or into wall, down, then out the other wall.. ) just ideas

1.)I was wanting to buy another DSL modem to hook up in the basement so she would have access to the net.

2.)I was also told that I would need to run CAT5 cable to my computer in the basement (this is not an option since I own a 2 story home w/basement).

3.)My other option was to run a wireless network. I already have one for my laptop and it does not get a signal in the basement.

4.)Another modem would be the best option for me. Can I make this work?? Please help! Thank You.

1.) you're working the problem backwards. you don't use an answer to find the problem. you start with the problem and find a solution. another modem is one example of a way to do it but probably not the easiest, cheapest, or most clever way to do things.

2.) this would be a more viable option than spending ~$100 or payments on another cable modem. it would be easier to set up, cheaper, and smarter in the long run. your argument that 'this is not an option because i own a two story home' doesn't make sense. cat-5 is very reasonable and nearly without a doubt your best bet.

3.) wireless works and thats fine. since you probably have weak access point radio, or a thick or rf insulated basement, than don't use this.

4.) again you ask a question but give the answer to your question. no, its not your best option.

i fell your problem. i have a comp set up in my basement and 2 upstairs. in fact, i ened up using a wired router  (linsys if its matters)

heres what i did - took a srewdriver and about an hour. if you have centrall air, find a vent near your computer upstairs which runs down the wall. fit the tip of the cable through the vent and have someone in the basement listen for the cable in the vent if you have a drop down ceilind youll need to remove a tile obviously) in the basement. find it and find a vent in the basement you can pull the cable out through. sounds like alot of work - but its worth the hassle, it cuts out alot more in the long run. 2 other things: The position of the router is a major factor in what you spend on cable, and if your not good with networking and XP is on all computers delete all networks, turn on all computers, and make a new one using the wizard. Hope it helps :wavey:
