two nic's. Same model. Pain the the arse!

I think god purposely sent these two nic cards down to earth just to piss me off. They're both the same card model. One of the nics came in the server (think my sisters x-finace put it in there - server is my sis' old pc). He also gave me a box (cardboard, not computer)with 3 more. One of them is the exact same model as the server has. I've just started dealing them now that I'm gonna network our dsl pipe.

Card: Linksys EtherPCI LAN Card II (ethernet & BNC combo)


Card #1:
Server: Light in back comes on, PNP picks up, windows does not think it's the card for the drivers when I try to install them. I try manually, and it can't communicate with it.

My PC: Light comes on, PNP will not pick it up...evar

My Dad's PC: Same thing as my PC

Card #2:

Server: Not attempted, frankly, I don't see the point

My PC: Light does NOT come on, PNP picks it up, drivers install fine, driver cannot communicate with it...ever!

My Dad's PC: ditto

Other: In order for it to even see the nic all 3 pci slots had to have a device in them (in this case 56k modem and sound card)

As for the other 2 nics that came in the box, one is ISA netware built for dos and OS/2, which is out of the question. The other one works in my PC. Well, the driver responds. If it has to actually work with a ethernet connection has yet to be tested

To be quite honest with you, I've dealt with those very same NIC cards here at UCSD. SPAMThis year alone, I have tried...and I emphasize the TRIED...to fix a downed network connection on 6 different computers with these cards. SPAMI hate to admit this being the Linksys fan that I am. SPAMThose cards suck. SPAM:( In the few instances that I have gotten a few to work, I used a driver disk that someone gave to me. SPAMLet me know if you want to try these and I can probably email them to you.

I know it's a scary thought, but NIC's do only cost about $15ish, depending on the card you get. SPAMYou could always just go pick up a couple new ones, if worse comes to worse.

actually, they're $9 at frys. But...my dad has no job, I'm having to partially pay for the hub ($24). I need this whole project to cost as little as possible.

I just sent the files to you. SPAMI compressed the whole disk and zipped it up for you. SPAMHope they work out and if not, good luck on solving that problem.

I tried them on my mom's computer. No luck, 98 and ME both restarted during startup. As it did with this national datacomm nic also (one I got to work in mine, but it's drivers lay it on a little thick causing a bit of lag in tribes2). So, I'm gonna try the two in my machine and see if your drivers work. Thx 4 the drivers :)

NICs can be a pain in the *ss
one thing to try is, SPAMif you have PNP enabled in BIOS
turn it of SPAMand install "manually" SPAMor if it is off
enable it.

hmm strange. I put the nic in my pc and it worked immediately (off the crappy drivers I tried a few weeks ago) SPAM:o


however the program to configure it said it failed to detect it. I'm sensing the problem in the hardware of both the nic's themself.

does the config app give you a choice of IRQs ?

no. I just select the "setup" and it says it can't communicate with the card (very quickly, I can hardly see it)

Hhmm...sorry that the drivers didn't work out for you. SPAMI'm sure you've probably done this...but, have you run the diagnostics on the NICs yet?
