Eudora questions
My ISP just sent me new software. After installing it, my MS Outlook won't work anymore...in fact, the "send/receive" button that is usually on the top tool bar is missing in action. Anyone out there ever seen such a thing?

I can use Outlook Express, but I cannot use any of the features in Outlook period!

Also, thought this might be a good time to try Eudora. I loaded it up and now i can't figure out how to import my stuff from Outlook/Outlook Express. Any suggestions??? SPAMAlso, for some SPAMreason Eudora will not download my email. SPAMMy ISP is a filtered internet provider. SPAMCould this be the reason? SPAMI am thinking that a quick call to tech support may be the answer here.

ISP is actually Lifeway Online. SPAMNew software is simply called ISP Brand Internet. SPAMthey use software called Gearbox. SPAMI have tried to use Eudora, but I keep getting certificate errors. SPAMThe messages say that the certificate name and the server name are different. SPAMMan...what a mess. SPAMEverything was fine until the new ISP software. SPAMAny suggestions?

I went to Lifeway Online's website to see if they had a tech support section but it looks like they didn't. SPAMFrom what you've told me about Outlook and Outlook express, I'm guessing their software configured Outlook express and not Outlook to their mail servers. SPAMI know of a lot of ISPs that do that. SPAMThey don't think that many users use Outlook and so totally disregard it. SPAMI'm guessing that you will need to change your incoming and perhaps your SMTP mail servers in Outlook. SPAMYou can check it out in Outlook Express since you say that is working. SPAMGo to Tool > Accounts > (highlight your ISP mail account) Properties > Servers tab and check what it says for your POP3 and SMTP servers and compare that with the ones in Eudora...then check the ones listed in Outlook.

I had the same problem when I switched to cable (Road Runner) I had to change my SMTP mail server to route through their servers in order for me to send mail out. SPAMI also noticed that they had an 800 tech support number listed in their HELP section (bottom of the screen). SPAMIf changing the mail servers doesn't work then I would suggest giving them a call.

From what I can tell with Eudora, if you want to import something from Outlook/Outlook Express, you can only import the settings for the account and not the messages. SPAMImporting the regular way only goes for Netscape or Outlook Express. SPAMIf you need to import something from Outlook then you'll need to click on the "Advanced" tab in the import window. SPAMIt will direct to you what files you need to look for at the top of each blank box. SPAMI also checked the Eudora help files and they also give you step by step instructions on how to import you mail settings. SPAMSearch for "import" in the Index tab. SPAMLet me know if this works...

Thanks Hulaboy...Last night I was up until nearly 0130 in the morning. SPAMI uninstalled both my ISP and Eudora and tried to reinstall each one. SPAMFirst I installed Eudora and that worked like a charm. SPAMYou are correct though...it asked me about importing and automatically set up for importing from Outlook Express. SPAMIt imported the mail settings but not the email. SPAMi will work on that one later.

Then I reinstalled Lifeway Online. SPAMIt actually recognizes all three mail programs (Outlook, Outlook Express, and Eudora), but after installing the software I had to reboot about four times before it would actually go all the way through the boot cycle. SPAMit kept freezing and I could do nothing except hit the reset button. SPAMCtrl-Alt-Delete did not even work. SPAMFinally, I have it now where it will boot up all the way.

Next problem...if you are familiar with Eudora, at the bottom of the screen it displays messages for errors. SPAMThe first time I tried to download email it refused to download saying something about the certificate not being recognized. SPAMAfter playing for a while i found the area where I could force the program to recognize and accept the certificate from the mail server. SPAMStill no joy as it now says that the name on the certificate and the name of the server are not the same. SPAMi realize that this is a part of Eudora which is there to protect people from getting viruses and other malicious stuff, but I still do not have it figured out. SPAMI am sure that Lifeway has had to deal with this problem before so I will give tech support a call and try to get it worked out.

Oh, by the way, even after reinstalling there is no "send/receive" tab on the tool bar in Outlook and Outlook Express is still the only program that works so far. SPAMi have actually been thinking about changing to Eudora for quite some time, but it has always been just more convenient to stay with Outlook. SPAMWell...looks like it is time for a change that will hopefully protect me from any nasty email viruses as well. SPAMthanks for the come-back. SPAMHopefully this will provide you with some more info on where I am at and maybe you have a few more helpful suggestions.

The last thing is that I uninstalled my Epson drivers...took everything off the computer...shut everything down...replaced the USB cable with my serial cable...turned everything on and replaced the drivers that came with the printer. SPAMSo far so good. SPAMStill have not had a chance to try to print any graphics...as that is where I was having my problem. SPAMBut then again, with all the difficulty that my ISP software has been giving me, I wonder if the screen freezing when i try to print graphics has anything to do with Lifeway Online software. SPAMAnother possibility???

Okay, I sort of misunderstood your problem with Outlook. SPAMYou're actually missing the "Send/Receive" button on the top toolbar. SPAMYou can right click anywhere on an empty space of the tool bar area and select Customize from the drop down list that pops up. SPAMFrom there, you can add or remove any button you like from the toolbar. SPAMI'm not really a big user of Outlook and so I had to set Outlook up on one of my computers here. SPAMHope that works for you.

In Eudora, would you by chance happen to have "Allow authentication" checked? SPAMIf you do, uncheck that option and try sending yourself a test email through Eudora. SPAMThese options are located in the Getting Started and Sending Mail sections. SPAMLet me know if that doesn't work as well.

You said you were using a serial cable with your Epson printer? SPAMDo you mean parallel cable? SPAMAnyway, I did some poking around on Epson's support page and it wasn't too helpful (surprise, surprise). SPAMIf you right click on My Computer and select Properties and then the Device Manager tab, are there any devices that have an exclamation mark next to them? SPAMAlso, when you reinstall the drivers and software for the printer, does it say that it was successfully installed? SPAMI believe that on some Epson printers you'll need to deactivate the Epson Status Monitor from the system (CTRL-ALT-DEL and then End Task it) before uninstalling the software. SPAMIf the drivers and software was installed correctly, try running a self print test and let me know if it passes that or not.

Still can't get the Outlook email program to work. SPAMI went to the Customize area and on the right I have categories as follows: SPAMView, Tools, Actions, Help, Macros, Menu Bar, Standard, Web, Advanced, New Menu, File, and Edit. SPAMOn the right is a column entitled "Commands". SPAMI have searched out each one and looked at all the commands possible, but still no "send/receive" button.

Actually, that is not all bad. SPAMI have been thinking for a long time about switching to Eudora. SPAMI think I have solved the problem there too. SPAMIt would not download mail because I still had the SSL (Secure Socket Layering) enabled. SPAMOf course, by turning this off, I make myself a bit more vulnerable, but at least I can read my email now and wean myself off of Outlook and Outlook Express. SPAMIt will take a bit of time and effort to transfer my mail, one email at a time, to Eudora, but this also allows me to clean up all the excess email that I have in my folders.

Also, I seem to have solved the problem with my Epson printer as well. SPAMI uninstalled all the software, turned the computer off, swapped out the USB for the standard printer cable, and reinstalled the software from the disk. SPAMI printed off a jpg graphic file tonight and it printed fine.

Good to hear that you got everything up and running. SPAMI'm still kind of perplexed as to what they did with your "send/receive" button in Outlook. SPAMIt's too bad you can't import email messages into Eudora. SPAMI guess the only thing to be weary about is the attachments that you get. SPAMI make it a point to just ignore Word, Excel, and anything else that is attached to email that isn't from somebody I personally know. SPAMAnything that has a .vbs extension automatically goes to my Trash bin. SPAMThat has always worked for me and it's what has prevented me from getting any viruses ever since I started using email.

So what do you think was the problem with your printer? SPAMWas it the new drivers that you installed from the web? SPAMAs I recall, you used the new drivers in place of the old ones and that's when the proverbial "sh*t hit the fan," so to speak. SPAMIn any case, glad to hear that almost everything is working as they should. SPAMHow's the burner operating by the way?

ACtually...I don't have a clue as to what the problem was with the printer. SPAMAll I know is that I have the other cable on and the original drivers. SPAMI will let this run for a while like this just to make sure that there are no hiccups...and then I may play with the new drivers to see if I get an error. SPAMI know I can always get back to a stable system (boy...that sounds pretty bold considering I am talking about "blue screen of death" windows...).

I have been so busy trying to get everything up and running stable that I still have not tried much with the burner. If it weren't midnight here I would give it a shot tonight. SPAMCouldn't sleep...I was in bed at about 10 and tossed and turned. Once my wife was asleep I came down to work on this some more. SPAMHad to wait until my son was finished "playing". SPAMHe has a think for Final Fantasy and a couple of online things. SPAMWish I could get him to spend equal time looking for a college (one more year of high school and it's "empty nest" time).

ANy suggestions on what I should begin with on the burner. SPAMI have never had one before so I'm a bit unsure where to start. SPAMI suppose I could copy some music disks to start with. SPAMI have 50 CDRs on the way. SPAMThe TDK came with 2 CDRs and 1 CD-RW. SPAMPlus I bought a ten pack of CDRs from Target, so I have some to get started with. SPAMWhat do you suggest I start with? SPAMAny hints on the nero software? SPAMBy the way, do you know of any good Napster alternatives. SPAMI am really into Jazz and New Age music.

Hahaha! Not meaning to laugh at the situation but I know all too well the "tossing and turning in bed and then deciding to work on the computer until the wee hours of the night" thing. SPAMI can't tell you how many all-nighters I've pulled...not because of school...but because of me tinkering around with the systems here.

I know the first thing I tried when I got my first burner was to make music compilations for myself. SPAMI don't know if Nero comes with a feature that let's you grab music tracks from CDs because I use Audiograbber (http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/) for that purpose. SPAMIt's a nice shareware utility for $20 that'll grab music off discs and even converts them to MP3 format if you want to...provided you get the right encoder. SPAMI would recommend getting the LAME 3.88 encoder that was released. SPAMIt encodes a CD track to MP3 format in about 1 minute...very fast compared to what I used before.

If you have MP3's that you would like to burn to a CD and play on a regular CD player, then you can just use Winamp to convert the MP3's to .WAV format and then burn them on the CD.

For napster alternatives, there was a thread in the General (http://www.netsmog.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=general&action=display&num=991358980) section that listed some other Napster alternatives. SPAMI use Music City.com (http://www.musiccity.com) and their Morpheus client. SPAMIt works just like Napster.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding burning the .wav files or how to convert the .mp3 to .wav.

I am so new at this...do you need to format the CDR media before you try to burn anything onto it? SPAMAnd do you always have to convert the MP3 files to .wav to be able to listen to your new CD on a CD player? SPAMI feel like an idiot here...but if I don't ask I will never know.
