sorry to post a tech question here but i'm out of ideas.....

My parents old clunker has developed an odd habit. Apparently my dad went to a website and it said Explorer has performed an illegal operation. When he clicked ok it restarted the comp. Then when it rebooted it errored again and froze up.
When he turned off the computer and back on it shut itself off when windows started. Now every time I turn the computer on as soon as my wallpaper loads and windows makes its opening sound, it shuts itself off with no warning or gives me the blue screen of death with the title windows, fatal exception 0E at 0028:c02A026C in VXD Vwin32(05) + 00000BF4 and then it shuts itself off.

I don't believe it's a problem with the heatsink/fan/overheating/etc. because it happens at the same point in windows startup every time. Also, if i run windows in safe mode it works fine.

I believe the problem is with VXD but i'm not sure what that is, what it does, or how to fix it. I also thought it was a problem with the BIOS because it is just shutting itself off and i don't believe windows can do that. I ran automatic skip driver and it says that, Calling a PNP BIOS => Write Extended System Configuration Data (ESCD), caused windows to stop responding, it says the reference to the problem is 43 00 00 00 c0 02 b8 02 e8 00 00 00 and to call the computer manufacturer.

Unfortunately the computer manufacturer is the bankrupt packard bell and i don't feel like dropping 30 bucks to have them tell me they can't do anything. Any suggestions on what to do? if you need any additional info let me know. It's running a cyrix m-2 300 mhz packard bell computer with 64 mb of ram on Windows 98 (not the second edition). I believe i had the latest shutdown driver from microsoft and all necessary critical updates. It's running a diamond monster fusion 16mb video card and the original ess sound card. I also believe all the drivers are up to date.

dont worry about posting tech questions here, this place welcomes that
:) especially new members :D

anyways
looks like OS got messed up... corrupted or something
it might be recycling bin's function getting the HDD messed up as ive read on some board about Vwin32(5)

also read this thread

id do a backup of your important data if you can, then format and reinstall win98 (use 98se this time)

if im right thats fatal exception #14, a VXD is very similar to an .exe, and win32 is usually something to do with kernel.. maybe he got a bad virus? anyway.. id say take evils advice and reformat.

I believed it was a virus because my dad didn't install any new hardware or software and god knows he can't change the registry....or any other computer setting for that matter. Unfortunately i couldn't run a virus scanner or spyware prog in safe mode. What worked was a scanreg restore of a date before the incident happened. When windows loaded i immediately ran a virus scanner and found a malicious spyware trojan. I'll blame that as the cause. don't ever let your parents touch a computer.....everytime i go over there to check on their computer they have new trojans and 5000 spyware files and a hijacked browser....actually the browser hijackers are fighting over who gets final control over the homepage i'm rooting for ok.cool!

It could also be just a corrupt file. Either way, formatting and re-installing will fix the problem. If you do that, be sure to back up everything.
