Problem pinging computer (XP family / pro)

I'm having a problem with a network I'm setuping at home... I've been trying to figure it out and search for assistance for the past few weeks.

Basically, I have 2 comps; both are connected on a router, which is on a DSL connection.
comp#1 has XP pro
comp#2 has XP family

Both computers are able to connect to the internet with no problem, however, they can't see eachother in the workgroup... (sometimes comp#2 sees comp#1, but cannot access it, sometimes it just doesn't see it at all) ... I tried the 'ping' command both ways, and I figured out that comp#2 couldn't ping comp#1 (even tho comp#1 can ping comp#2 no problem)

Also, my friend came here yesterday and brought his laptop with XP Family and he connected on the router too, he had no problem sharing with comp#2, but couldn't ping comp#1 either...

There is no firewall activated

So I'm guessing the problem is on comp#1 since the other machines can't ping it ; but what could cause it to be unable to respond to pings???

i'm guessing you might have comp 1's IP wrong


it might have the XP pro firewall on.. which might be blocking pings..

yes.. xp firewall sux indeed, its too protective.

it's too protective in some places and not good enough in others.. it sucks.. but its better than nothing

No, the router gives comp1 a correct IP adress and I type the correct IP when I try to ping.

... So as I said, no there is no firewall activated and DUH I wouldn't have been searching help for weeks if it was just a stupid firewall cause it's the first thing I checked and it's the first thing that all the people who tried to help me made me check first.

go take it to your local canadian comp shop.. pay em like $200........

Did I look mad/angry? Didn't mean to, it's just that I took the time to write in bold that did not have any firewall on so we could skip the 'you got a firewall on?' step :P

you could try disabling simple file sharing

some routers have bugs and if DHCP is enabled, it kinda screws up file and printer sharing

i had problem with my SMC wireless B router that i got for $20 CAD

but i solved it by disabling DHCP
and manually provide the IPs to each comp
give that a try

..................agh...... that screwed up everything and I had to reset my router... gaaaaaah...... and anyway I don't think that could solve the problem, since the problem is not directly file and printer sharing, the computer just cannot be pinged, therefore file sharing doesn't work

And the computer is getting the correct IP from the router, so I don't think that setting the IP's manually would change much.

Also, I don't think the problem is because of the router ; since it worked fine between a 3rd computer on the network (with XP Family) and comp#2 (also with XP Family) ; I am 110% sure that if comp#1 would have XP Family it would work right away... but then again, it has XP Pro and there has to be a way to make it work

how do you know its the right IP?

btw.. it's called XP home... not family...
