oh.. and how much does it weigh?

Battery Life = 2 hours if on MAX setting w/ full brightness and all.
@.5 to 3 hrs if you use speedstep.

Wireless is GREAT! I never thought it be as good as PCMCIA cards but the distance is very very good for it being internal..

Weight - under 6lbs

No problem...
Now back to the Thread.

For the members that are interested in the laptop,
I'll also add:

A laptop video card heatsink. With (2) New tubes of Artic Silver Thermal CPU paste.

The copper plate is if you intend to upgrade or replace the cheap factory foam pads with high quality copper heatsinks. Providing excellent cooling for the video card. It can be used on the FX5200 , 4200Go, Radeon 9000 & 9600, and Nvidia Quadro Series.

I'll included intructions on modding your video card.

Okay Jason.....
Apologies on seeming Up-tight.....

For the $1,100 I would include USPS Pririoty shipping with insurance for the over $1000. Unless you prefer a different shipping method, I'll abide by the buyers choice.

Updated pic....
You will have to give me 24hrs on. I have a crappy $19.99 Digital camera w/ no flash and if I'm to take a good pic...i'll have to borrow my friend's 3 MP digital camera.

Hi Again...

my apologies, my friend with the 3 MP camera is still recovering from Hurricane Charley. We all live in central Florida and got hit pretty hard. I've gone ahead and taken some pics w/ the crappy digital camera I have as soon as I can get a hold of a better camera I'll post better pics...but for now this is all I have. Don't mind the unprofessional-ness of these pics....Pictures is not my career nor hobby....lol.

you say 3 hours with speedstep... how does speedstep test?

U.N.inspector
08-21-2004, 05:27 PM
Don't under stand what u mean.
All I do is:

With BIOS defaults set on power saving mode and the installation of the speedstep program in windows XP. The P4 processor drops to 1.5ghz or so when on battery, I lower the brightness of the screen and it goes for 2+hours. I have not sat next to it with a stop clock but I've come home and sat on the couch for 2.5hrs (3PM-5:30PM) on the lappy after a long work day....

A second battery module is available on ebay if you need 5 hours....fit on 2nd module bay so you'll have 2 batteries.

with general net and document use, how much do you usually get on a full charge?

U.N.inspector
08-21-2004, 06:23 PM
Jason...
just short of 3hrs would be about the max. I don't think this battery even "new" could go on longer than 3hrs with the Pentium 4-M onboard.
Ergo the now, new Dell 8600 Centrino line which can hit 4-5hrs on one battery.

Currently the FX 5200 card. I had Doom 3 on 600 x 800 med. quality. But here's the good part. This lappy has the following cards available for it thru ebay or Dell:

Geforce 4200Go 64MB
ATI Radeon 9000 32MB
ATI Radeon 9600 Turbo 128MB
Nvidia Geforce FX 5650 128MB
Nvidia Quadro Fx 700 128MB
Nvidia Quadro Fx 1000 128MB

And here's the GREAT news. For the buyer of this lappy. I will include:

A laptop video card heatsink. With (2) New tubes of Artic Silver Thermal CPU paste.

The copper plate is if you intend to upgrade to any of these cards or replace the cheap factory foam pads with high quality copper heatsink. It provides excellent cooling for the video cards and is a must for a gamer.

Intructions will be also provided for modding your own video card if you so choose.

I don't know of any 128 mb cards for notebooks.. even the 9700 is 64... irreguardless this won't be for much gamings, so I might just put it on there..

and is there any G compatibility with that or is it only b?

just like there's an fx5200 256mb... but it still sucks..

exactly..
the only laptop gpus that i know of that i know perform well in benchmarks is 9600 pro and 9700 pro (and of course the 9800 pro, thats thats way too much $$). If they are not pros they really suffer in gaming for laptops. 5700 ultra gpu is also really fast.. but then again these are pricey upgrade options. Your choice.

news flash: there are no pros for laptops...(ati)

there are non pros for everything noob.. but the question is.. WHY? Not worth it.

Jason425
08-24-2004, 01:02 AM
you misread what you quoted..

gaming on laptops is still and will likely remain uneconomical for some time.. My main concern is battery life and that is why I haven't jumped all over this laptop yet...

StinkyMojo
08-24-2004, 11:38 AM
yes there are non pros if thats what you are trying to get after. My mom's laptop is a 9600. The pro adds on more clock and mem MHz, which she doesnl't have. And If you are all about battery life... it doesn't mean that a high powered cpu can get you there. a centrino 1.4 is just as good if not better for battery life.

Jason425
08-24-2004, 12:17 PM
oh my god! i quit.. someone point it out to him that i'm saying that there are no pro's for laptops.. and he's off in la la land..

centrino's are better for battery life.. exactly why I haven't bought this yet.. as it's not a centrino...

U.N.inspector

The hard drive is a 4200RPM. The drive would have been over $250 if it was 5400RPM or better.

if there are any downsides of that laptop on ebay, it would be the gpu (but Jason said that he doesn't plan to game in the first place with it, so that rules it out) and the fact that it says it is refurbished... so basically some other guy had it and shat on it and sent it back to acer, who slapped on some pieces back into it and are selling it right back.

Jason425
08-26-2004, 12:54 PM
I am aware of both the gpu and the fact that it's refurbished.. but refurbished is just as bad as used...

Every other area I got over you.. from 1GB RAM, 5400rpm HD
and the Radeon 9600 which leaves your Intel graphics 2 like a smudge on someone's windshield.
and all for $150 less.....
I would be up to a trusty comparison of Sys Sandra results...

key quotes of the review
I was surprised a little by the lack of USB ports on sides. That is unusual.
I think all of them, except for the last button, are too small to be used with comfort. While it's suitable for rarely used WLAN and touchpad off buttons, it's not that good for browser and email ones. Blue data transfer and lock LEDs are also located nearby.

Besides, I believe 1680x1050 is too high for a comfortable resolution.

What you will have to get used to is the optical drive eject button located in the lower, narrow part of the body. This makes impossible accidental ejects, but also makes purposely pushesv harder than average (I succeeded on the second try).

I guess it's sensible to compare only Centrino models by standalone operation time. M6B00Ne considerably loses in this field with 100% repetition. Well, this is a drawback of increased performance. The gap is actually too big, but maybe will be reduced in serial models.

as long as you enjoy it.. 8)

I wish you luck at school and I hey.......enojy your lappy.
Any lappy that is "new" is a plus in my book.
