HL2 source code leaked!

Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.

Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

This will only delay HL2 and cause all sorts of problems for Valve and HL2.

Im certain that the person penetrating Valve was concerned that his trusty wallhack, aimbot, and ghost hacks would work. I honestly dont see why people cheat or bother with the release of code like this. Might as well set your computer up to play by itself. You only prove how pathetic your gaming skills are and how you like to hurt a companies product.

hl2 isnt gonna come out till next year at this rate

eviltechie 10-05-2003 07:50 PM

ATI is working on it too
just helping Valve to get the directX9 stuff right

gnogtr 10-06-2003 09:15 AM

I hope it's perfect when it comes out at this rate.

Prometheus 10-06-2003 11:27 AM

Prometheus 10-06-2003 11:28 AM

Uranium-235 10-06-2003 03:46 PM

I usually don't care as long as it isn't referring to a person

Prometheus 10-06-2003 04:05 PM

What is i say Fuck me?

I added the * on my own btw

Uranium-235 10-06-2003 05:48 PM

more like as long as you're not insulting another person with it.

gnogtr 10-06-2003 06:10 PM

I have the game preordered. I should have known something like this would happen. I hope they catch the losers.

Prometheus 10-29-2003 01:41 PM

i dled the HL2 anon beta stolen thingy

Valve is way behind what they said they were...ithink they leaked it as a way to buy them more time......

gnogtr 10-29-2003 08:27 PM

Where did you get it from, I'd like to see what the fuss is all about.

Prometheus 10-29-2003 09:04 PM

IRc channels

www.packetnews.com

eviltechie 10-29-2003 09:05 PM

its everywhere
but the beta is old
its been out even before they announced their code leak

gnogtr 10-29-2003 09:58 PM

This may sound stupid, but how do you get it to download on that site, I click on the link and it just sits there. I'm trying to get the 1.4GB one, I guess it's the right one....

Re: Anon HL2

Lame. I saw it at a buds. After entering the console you can enter map areas by typing "map xxxxxx". Some levels work...some don't. I can hardly wait for the real deal - but if you are looking for a real preview I wouldn't waste my time looking for or at this pirated release.

Prometheus 12-15-2003 05:27 PM

you have to have MIRC

StinkyMojo 12-15-2003 06:07 PM

Dammit, stop talking about hl2... you are making my anticipation level go higher than it should!!

anon 03-25-2004 12:01 PM

I downloaded the compiled leak...It's actually pretty cool. I recently bought an ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 Pro graphics card, and it came with a coupon to get Half-Life 2 for free when it comes out, anyways, so I'm already anticipating it as much as possible. Heh heh. But, anyways, I was looking around, and started using the included programs (i.e. Half-Life 2 Model Viewer, Choreographer, etc). The Choreographer is a really neat program (it's the one Gabe used to make the G-Man talk in the E3 Tech Demo). If anyone can figure out how to MAKE him lip-sync, please tell me! All I can do is make him mouth one syllable at a time!
Peace out!

StinkyMojo 03-25-2004 03:18 PM

Yeah, Gabe is the man...

Jason425 03-25-2004 06:20 PM

system of a down sucks .. kthx.. put chun li back on there

StinkyMojo 03-26-2004 10:46 AM

chun li already won the championship and is on her way back to China to visit her family and friends. She successfully defeated M. Bison in one swift strike. She will return for another round soon though.

PS. System of a Down > You :poke:

Dragon 03-26-2004 10:51 AM

would it be illegal, hypothetically, to have posession of the stolen source code? cuz i hypothetically know someone who does. hypothetically.

Prometheus 03-26-2004 11:16 AM

no not really...it was illegal to steal it...and now that its public its fine.......i suppose from a moral point of view no it isnt.....

StinkyMojo 03-26-2004 11:34 AM

yep, I wouldn't dare put it on any of my comps at home until at least the retail ships..

Prometheus 03-26-2004 02:03 PM

i did

i had fun with it for a few days then got rid of it...

As I would too.... good choice ;)

Dragon 03-26-2004 07:28 PM

in that case - hypothetically, it wont extract from rar after extracting from tar any suggestions for my hypothetical dilemma?
