PS3 to replace the Computer?
http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/02/p...your-computer/
Apparently a Sony VP believes that the PS3 will replace the need for a pc. Perhaps that is why they are going to charge 1 million dollars per unit. :) The problems consoles have compared to pcs are they are fixed and non-upgradable. On top of that they do not come with any good interface that facilitates interaction like a pc. (IE they do not have a keyboard). I really thought all the next generation consoles would have native keyboard modes. That they don't is a huge drawback in their ability to replace the pc. Without the standard input mode built-in, it becomes an unsupported kludge and hack that varies from one machine to the next. I played a MMORPG on my PS2, and have both a USB keyboard and a controller keyboard. Let me jjust say neither is pretty, nor intuitive. I would love to do more computing on a console in front of the tv, but without core keyboard and mouse support it will never happen. You can't just leave it up to each program to set up support for keyboards and mice. So you guys are going to have to wait at least another generation for the replacement of the pc by the console, because no keyboard, no go. |
Yeah, I read an article similar on Gamespot...I understand how useful the PS3 will be as a multi-purpose console...but saying that it would replace a PC is a little over the line
As you said upgrades as well as the general feel of it, is already making the PC different from any other consoles. |
How Sony-like... this is just another reminder for me not to buy a ps3.. ;)
|
Oh I'll still buy a PS3 (If I can raise money outside of my job and have enough on the launch date.)...but I agree that they really really should stop saying things like that

Well no wonder they think they can get away with charging almost 600 for it - if that rumoured price is accurate. When I buy consoles, I want them to be just that. And as has been stated, you can't even upgrade them so what is the real point?
|
yeah exactly, I dont buy a game console for internet access..I usually play my games on the PS to get away from my beign online a bit :)

the PS3 is going to run Linux, and probaly will replace a need for a computer, running at 3.2 GHZ, it can and will.
|
its like a 600 dollar computer that plays PS2 and PS games, has HD, and connects to the internet with a a full browser. And has a 60 Gig hard drive and an expensive blue-ray player.

didnt read the article, but that is the biggest farce ive ever heard
ill own 50 more pc's before i own a PS |
The PS3 is actually pretty amazing. It is, without a shadow of a doubt the best console,(yes, better than XBOX) it just doesn't have the variety of games that other consoles do.
