What brand/version of Linux?

I am looking to download Linux again. I have had a rather unpleasant experience with RedHat 7.2 because of a rather common problem with the introduced version of GRUB.

This time, I want to know what brand/version everyone likes and what their experiences have been. Thanx.

I've had some unpleasand trouble with Mandrake, after the install it won't boot to GUI cause the X-Drake (I think) interface keeps crashing.  I've got it working a few times but then I still have trouble with it crashing on shut down and other bugs.  I'm about to try Red Hat but hate to here it didn't work for you.  Did it give you the choice of using Lilo as the boot loader?  Works great on my computer haven't used Grub.  I am really pleased with http://www.lycoris.com/.  Only install program I've seen that lets you play Solitare while it's installing.  Haven't used it much yet but seems like a good product all in all.

Actually, I did opt for LILO as I do know a little bit about that, but it still installed GRUB instead, and when I tried to change it, it accepted the settings every time but never changed. Plus, it crashed on me once, which hasn't happened to me with 2000 or XP on this motherboard. These are all known glitches in that version.

RedHat 7.3 is supposed to fix all that and I have heard many good reviews of 7.3. I would still rather stay away from RH for the time being: only have time to download one on a 56k connection and not too many cd-r's right now.

Caldera allows you to play Pacman while it installs!!!

I would go with Red Hat or FreeBSD, I use both currently.

There are more ports availabe for RH than BSD but I still like them both.

I broke my cherry in BSD and Only use RH becuase of the need to use Chili!ASP

Both are free to download if you have patience. Am download 7.3 RH currently. Just about done with ISO 1 Should be done by Sat or Sun hopefully.

I have used Redhat, storm, mandrake, and debian.  By far my favorite is mandrake.  It is the easiest to configure and install.  If you are a beginner, I would definetly start out with mandrake.  Once you learn to use it a little better you can then customize it however you want.

cheers...

HA HA HA! He is one of two things.

I too, use mandrake. I had escapades with Redhat 7.2 and mandrake is Much easier to configure, and much easier for us linux n00bs to understand. (from my point of view)

in that, I mean I have actually managed to make it do what I WANT it to on some occassions.

I would have to agree. i just installed RH7.3 and I can't get samba working but on Mandrake it was easy

vee_ess 07-29-2002 01:51 AM

So I'll download Mandrake 8.0 then. But I have begun wondering if it is even worth downloading it because Linux doesn't support my modem or sound card. Please advise if you think it would be worthwhile anyways. I'll start on downloading it in the meanwhile.
